The superhero Doc Savage was also called "The Knight of the running board" because he would stand there as Ham or Monk- his assistants- drove, to shoot at pursuing enemies.
On a more personal level, the oldest car I knew in the family was a 1936 Dodge, the only one with a running board. I liked the "old car smell".We replaced it with a 1954 Ford TwoDoor while I recovered from the Measles.
It was not until my folks had both passed on, that I found that we had NOT blought it back in 1936, but in 1950 from a neighbor. I do not recall a prior car. No way I can find out now, as all parties have passed on. Just one of never-to-be-solved family mysteries now...
