only thing I'm feeling wrong with this is the 'smoke' or whatever it is doesn't feel in keeping with the rest of the picture.. I guess because of the linework it feels rather comic, whereas the creature, as with the others, is very solid and well formed.
compositionally also, especially evident when viewed as a thumbnail, the shape of the swarm doesn't feel good to me.. I'm afraid I don't know exactly why.. possibly because it's all one shape rather than breaking up into eddies and swirls and so on more like smoke.. I'm not sure.

The smoke is not so much smoke leaking out of the back of the creature as a swarm of insects flying out of it trailing some sort of smoky vapour, so I was aiming for a fairly thick curling mass rather than wisps, but I know where you're coming from with the comic-book style thing.

I suppose on some of them there'd be no necessary reason for eyes, it is a fairly terrestrial trait that we sort of give them . . .
I can't really think of one that would be obviously believable eyeless but it certainly can help on the creepiness scale. Of course it can be dangerous since people always try to see eyes on creatures, so you might end up with people assuming certain dints or holes are eyes and losing that feeling.

Ah that's true I suppose, I was thinking how some tyranids didn't have eyes, and it does certainly up the ante on creepy factor, but I guess blizzes choice of design went as far clarity of communication for "thats not an eye thats just a dent in its carapace" >.<

Ah excessive multiple eyes can be pretty creepy, but I'd say it's difficult to nail, I would say it looks better on smaller/lesser creatures than the huge ones.
You know what would be cool, if you made a zerg creature that has a signature aspect of every other creature all in one, or did blizz beat me to that idea -_-?
