Description Here we are!
About 20 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.

Final piece is up here -

NB - this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

I used lots of layers on these, so I just go back through them at the end

No probs!

what's an unsharp mask ?

Mr--Jack In reply to puinkey [2010-05-24 01:02:10 +0000 UTC]

A filter in PS that sharpens the edges in an image and makes it pop a little more.

Looking at it now I'm not sure actually, I guess I just wanted to define it a little more.
Probably wouldn't've hurt it to have left it bigger.

I would've just left the question hanging, but I recall you showing the same thing in your other Warjacks process (which I can't find for the life of me- will you make a separate category for them?).

There's a folder called processes in my gallery that they're in (there's only one other one though)

Somehow, I missed that. :I

I was talking about a folder for the Warjacks, though! Also, Good morning.

Rim lighting and how did it work for this piece? Thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to iMcQueeni [2010-05-24 00:58:57 +0000 UTC]

I guess it's a bit difficult to tell at this size but highlighting edges with a subtle glow/backlight really pops a form out of the background and can help to break up parts of a figure that perhaps get a bit muddy on top of each other.

How much time do you usually spend on the first 2 Steps? And how long on the overall rendering? ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to PariahJack [2010-05-24 00:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Well if the whole thing took 25 hours then, probably between 5 and 10 for the linework.

thanks for this! do you have a brush pack you use? or just the normal opacity jitter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to thewillofb [2010-05-24 00:54:28 +0000 UTC]

I do have a small pack - [link] - but aside from the smoky brush for the clouds / smoke this was pretty much all just a plain round brush with opacity

kradeelav In reply to ??? [2010-05-15 19:01:48 +0000 UTC]

Awesomesauce. I've seen that this is generally the common steps for most digital art; though the hardest part for me is always the fog/weather FX looks. I never can get it too look "foggy" just right and all of that. Any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to kradeelav [2010-05-24 00:52:55 +0000 UTC]

Um; I'm not sure, really; I usually use a rough-ish smoky sort of brush for that sort of thing but you can still get decent results with any regular brush as well - it really just takes practise like anything else

Thanks!

RedBladeStudios [2010-05-15 17:53:32 +0000 UTC]

Awesome step-by-step. Those further steps are great tips, I've run up against exactly the problems that these will fix. (I'm in the process of painting new material for my illustration portfolio to start submitting to tabletop/RPG companies.)

What was the final print resolution? Your details look pretty loose on that last frame, but it looks great in the other post. (Is that another technique unto itself, leaving little scratchy details like that, to present detail when viewed reduced? I always want to work in more.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to RedBladeStudios [2010-05-24 00:51:12 +0000 UTC]

it was about 4000px tall I think, which was a bit bigger than the size it was going to be printed at. Blowing an image like that up to screen res is always going to be a lot bigger than it'll be printed though since it's 72 vs 300 dpi, so you get away with a lot

Thanks!
and good luck

ArdentMind In reply to ??? [2010-05-15 17:29:54 +0000 UTC]

If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by rendering? Is there some special feature in photoshop that allows you to make metal-looking effects, or it it all brushwork?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to ArdentMind [2010-05-15 17:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Hehe; I wish (well, sort of) - yeah, I just mean the meat of the painting, rendering the form. (and pretending that my brain's a 3d-program, trying to work out lighting, reflections, all that stuff)
