Description
Here we are!About 20 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.
Final piece is up here -
NB - this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

in your workflow, do you scribble the lineart in Photoshop ore on a paper.
I am good in colouring but i totaly suck in lineart. So its interesting for me, which way you prefer?

I usually do it digitally (as in this case) but a lot of the time I do find it more comfortable to draw with a pencil

This is really wicked, man. God knows your tutorials have helped me a lot in my own paintings. You're one of the artists here in Deviantart that has given me a new boost in my interest in digital painting.
Is it true that you got discovered by blizzard thru your fan art? That's sort of what I'm trying to do. hehe (don't judge me-LOL) So far the Starcraft and Diablo team have tweeted on my fanart on their official twitter account.

Thanks man! I'm glad to hear it.
And yep, that's pretty much it It certainly wasn't a quick process, I can tell you that, but if you've been noticed already you've taken a good step in the right direction.

cool to see your way to work!
I noticed that the brush strokes are quite "fluid" more like SAI or Painter softwares.do u use one of these or Phtoshop to paint?

I've never tried anything else very much; I'm used to PS so that's what I use
Thanks!

Loving these process shots. Each step really shows the time and effort you put behind your work. I'm still floored by your rendering style. Very inspirational!

You are absolutely amazing.. Really...
What brush did you use to lay down the rough colors and shading/lighting?

I used the splodgy (technical term) brush from this set
Thanks!

Beautiful work. It's great to see a pic done in the "old" pre-PS way, ie beginning with a clear line drawing and building from there. It reminds me of when I studied how Simon Bisley and Jim Murray work. I think this sort of method has fallen out of favour in recent times; there's seems to be a culture of romanticising the whole "start with a blob, photoshop it until it's a mech with twenty guns" method, especially among concept artists... I find it yields mediocre results, more often than not, especially when some pro's showing off! It kinda makes people forget how much time is actually needed for a decent illustration. 20 hours is about right, and is a consolation!

Haha
Thanks kindly! I don't mind working the other way as well sometimes, but it depends on what is called for at the time - it's a lot harder to work like that if you're working to a specific design for your illustration - and especially unfeasible if you have to show a rough sketch first

Can I ask you what kind of brush do you use for the sketch and "fine line" phase?
BTW amazing work

In sketchbook pro I just use the basic 'pencil' tool, which pretty much behaves exactly like a pencil.
Thanks!

Thanks for posting this! Quick question, when you do the final steps of level adjustments and the unsharp mask, is that applied to a flattened version?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Mr--Jack In reply to gntlemanartist [2010-05-24 01:03:54 +0000 UTC]
The levels is usually an adjustment layer over the top, but the unsharp is to a final flattened version that gets saved separately

Thanks for posting. Did you save copies of this as you went, or did you just use lots of layers so you could recpature the earlier stages of development by switching layers on and off? (hope that made sense...)
