Description
Another piece of technical art from my comic 6-commando . This is the workhorse of the UNA, the VAMTAC "Taiga" armored car, favored for scouting and reconnaissance, rapid mobility for motorized infantry, rapid fire support, etc. It's the unsung hero of the United Nations - not as glamorous as the hovercraft or as powerful as the main battle tanks, it is nevertheless an essential part of every country's order of battle.Related content

Now that I look at it, it kinda reminds me of theΒ joint light tactical vehicle employed by the US today.

That abstract snow camouflage on the Norway example is really nice too. I don't see how it would actually work against a snowy backdrop but hey, that's a Rule of Cool sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Thanks! Actually I thought of it as a pattern-breaker. It doesnβt really work as arctic camouflage, for which plain flat white would be fine. But it serves to make the silhouette hard to read at a distance, especially on the move. The British invented it for their ships in World War I actually and it worked surprisingly well!

Β Β Β Remember that in WW2 the JEEP was used in Africa for deep behind enemy raiding operations.Β And were very effective.

Quite so! Β Notice that the tan Taiga car in perspective is from the British Long Range Desert Group.

Well, 6-Commando is on summer vacation, but I still have in mind to do some bits and pieces - maybe the Ranger 6x6 LAV, or the Howler WiGE hovercraft.

Indeed, it looks a lot like the Panhard VBR, which can go to show that this is a perfectly workable design. And I do really like all of Panhard military designs, especially the EBR (as can be seen from my gallery).
The name I'm assuming is a reference to the URO VAMTAC, the Spanish produced workhorse of the modern Romanian Army [link] ...
It's odd, but even though they look similar to the Humvee at a first glance, once you see them side by side (the Romanian Army operates both models), you realise they are in fact completely different vehicles.

make me think of that [link] : A 20mm gunned VBL.
Nice design : enought classic to be believable but not too much to be interesting.

It IS in fact based on the VBL! I love the design of that vehicle. The Taiga, however, is longer, more heavily armed and armored, and performs more like a HUMVEE.

VBL but longuer? VBR
Actally even the up armored hummer models are less armored than the standard VBL...
for the armement, if you want to do a highpoly model, I can give you my machinegun based on the M197 tri tube gatling of the Cobra : [link] (the only obligation would be to have the credits of this part of modeling)

Oh, my LORD. I basically designed a VBR without even realizing it. Even that angled plate-crease along the side - how did I never see this before?!
Well, actually, I guess, the Taiga is about halfway between the two, oddly.
Crazy, man.

Man, you, gotta hand it to Panhard. They have some amazing industrial designers on staff there. I mean, that is just one of the coolest vehicles I think I've ever seen! And you have to figure it will fill the role, too. Panhard makes some excellent LAVs.

I'm french and actually, the french light vehicules are pretty cools but for tanks, I prefer the israely and love the russian AAA tank.
The VBL, VBR, this CRAB are really good looking things.

For tanks I have to go with the M1 Abrams, with the Leopard II and Merkava-4 as close seconds. But I, also, like the Schilka. It features heavily in my comic.

Even if it's less usefull than the zsu23, I prefer the look of the the zsu 57.
I would put the Merkava 4 in first, the abrams never seduced me, maybe too simple for me.

Thanks! I like the design, myself. Like an armored SUV with a bigass gun on it. Sometimes, during rush hour, I wish I were driving one of these. But yeah, getting the weapon to look natural wasn't actually easy - in the early versions of the vehicle it looked kind of stuck on.
