Description Here is another Tutorial, I hope this helps!

In case you can't read it, this is what it says:
---
Step 1: Outline
-Pick a color that will stand out!

Trace the outline of the pony using a 1 pt thick line. You have to guess what is under the mane sometimes, but it gets easier the more you do it.
Follow the original lines as best as possible, its ok if the thickness is inconsistent sometimes.

Step 2: Eyes
-Fill in the outline of your base, using the bright color.

Use a different bright color to trace the eye.
Use another different color to trace the highlights and whites of the eye.
:bullet purple: For now use yet another different color to trace the main part of the eye.

Step 3: Fill it in!
-Cover all of the eye! Leave no spaces!

This is where you can choose to highlight the eye with multiple colors to mark where the shading should go. This part is optional, the eye does not have to be shaded
Make sure you get all of the white and highlight of the eye!

Step 4: Fill it all in!
-This part is by far the most tedious and boring, but muddle through it.

Make sure the entire pony is one color, to do this it is easier to accomplish with a bright noticeable color. It makes it easier to see if you missed any spots.
Make sure to erase and replace any strange looking lines that could potentially make your base look awkward.

Step 5: Background
-This part is also tedious, I suggest putting your music on shuffle and just having some type of head canon during this process (its what I do)

Unless you are doing a specialty background, its best to use a bright color to fill the background.
Then replace the background with a nicer color, I use the Deviantart green because it looks less gaudy and obnoxious.

Step 6: Color!
-THis is the fun part.

You can color in the pony now with the colors you want to make it look nicer than just a mix match of ugly bright colors.
Personally I just leave it the original color of the pony to give the base user a sense of who the base was of before it was a base~

How are we even supposed to get Lauren Faust's permission to make bases out of her art when she doesn't even reply to any of the comments that are left on her DA page?

You can try drawing your own bases instead of tracing.
It's not rocket science.

Hm. Well, the thing is, I'm not very good at drawing so I can't really make my own bases. The whole reason why bases exist in the first place is because most people can't even draw. And, hey, if you don't like it, then maybe just ignore it? And I'm pretty sure that Lauren Faust already know's that people make bases out of her art. I mean, if the original artist wasn't okay with it I'm quite sure that they'd have the person that made a base out of their art would ask them to take it down, and Lauren hasn't even asked anyone to take those MLP bases down yet.

except traced bases r actually a part of dA's catergories

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 1

Griffonmender In reply to Welcome-to-0z [2016-08-10 13:05:35 +0000 UTC]

Except copyright infringement is still copyright infringement, you could easily ask for permission from the original artist(s), and DA explicitly states that they WILL NOT protect you from legal action even if your infringing works are removed from Da.
It says so in the copyright policy:about.deviantart.com/policy/co…

In their exact words:"If you take my work down am I protected from a lawsuit? No. Even if DeviantArt takes an infringing work down, you may still be responsible for very significant damages if the copyright owner decides to sue you."

Further:"Some Cautions

  • In most cases it does not matter how much of the material you have used, whether it's a single frame, a few moments of audio, a short clip of video or any other sampling it's still considered to be protected by copyright and you still require the owner's permission for use.
  • It doesn't matter how you obtained the material, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.
  • It doesn't matter whether or not you've credited the proper owner, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.
  • It doesn't matter if you are not selling it or making a profit, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.
  • It doesn't matter if you can find other people using things without permission, it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.
  • It doesn't matter if you've edited it a little bit or made a few alterations, if it's recognizable it's still considered copyrighted and you still need permission.
  • Read licenses carefully to understand the type of permission they provide. For example, there are many versions of the Creative Commons - each giving different permissions."

And no, you are not automatically protected by Fair Use:"
What about "Fair Use"
"Fair Use" is the notion that some public and private uses of copyrighted works should not require the permission of a copyright owner. These circumstances are very limited, complex to analyze under the law and require the help of expert advice from a lawyer. We recommend you talk to your own lawyer if you want to know more about fair use as it applies to the work you are doing. If it turns out that it isn't fair use, you may be liable for very serious money damages. To learn more about fair use you can go here, here, here, and here."

Further, Faq #157 prohibits the use of items like video game sprites, celebrity photos, and SCREENSHOTS without the EXPLICIT PERMISSION of the copyright holder:help.deviantart.com/157/

(Tl, dr?)
In summary- it doesn't matter if DA has a "traced bases" category- bases made out of MLP screenshots-or any other copyrighted material- areΒ STILL copyright infringement, they are in direct violation of Faq #157 and the copyright policy of DA, "fair use" does NOT protect you, and you areΒ NOT protected from legal action even if they are taken down.

Traced bases made without permission are ART THEFT, whether you like it or not, and you can easily end up in serious legal trouble.

Griffonmender In reply to ReaThePegasus [2017-06-16 14:39:16 +0000 UTC]

Because some idiot on staff thought it was a good idea, despite great protest.

Also, it IS possible to ASK PERMISSION to trace something- which does not happen with this "tutorial."

If you use MS Paint, then you should use neon colours instead, then save it in 16 colour Bitmap. Then erase it using the eraser (if you know the "trick")

Colour pick the colour you want to erase, then right click and drag you're mouse over that colour, then it'll erase. Hopefully that makes sense

On the left on the keyboard theres a button called FN (At least on mine anyways) hold that button down, and then hold down a button called 'Print SCR', on my keyboard that button is on the Delete button. Hold both FN and Print SCR down and it'll take a screen shot of the entire page, I'd probably try to do it on a Netflix or Youtube video of an episode. When you have that, you can open it up in an editor.

I may or may not of helped, but I tried.
