Description
Since my last tutorial was apparently to complicated for people to understand, I literally did a step by step process using my paint tool windows and fun red circles to help guide those who have not used paint before, or who aren't literate it art brush lingo.F.A.Q.
1. What is a curve tool?
2. How did you erase the color?
3. Why are your lines so neat? How did you do that?
4. How do you do ((insert something obvious here))
5. You know there is an easier way to do it like, ((insert their way of doing bases))
6. I don't have Ms Paint!! ((Complain about my methods or something))
7. How do I screenshot??
8. Is the image technically mine?? Can I use a copyright Image??
I try to never use copyright images that belong to an artist online because, as an artist myself, I classify it as stealing. I have had my original artwork stolen from me, and it sucks.
I use screencaps because I am less likely to get in trouble for it, because the screencaps belong to hasbro and they are a very large company and wont crack down on me to hard for making bases of their images.
The best thing you can do is the same, use only screen caps from whatever show you want to make a base of, credit the owners of the image, and link to where you found the image.
But yes, making bases like this is technically illegal, but I am not to worried about it. Yolo.
That is why base makers are always under fire. I try to keep mine on the down low, and eventually I am going to delete all my bases that were not created using a screen cap.
9. Did you do this using Layer??
10. Isn't this just tracing??
However, just because it is traced, doesn't mean it isn't helpful.
That is how I learned to first draw, to color, to do anything artistic. I traced, I copied, and I learned form it.
Doing bases has helped me understand anatomy much better, and has allowed me to expand my horizon on different types of art styles. To you this may seem like a cheap trick to get people to like me, but really I'm just trying to help people get their start on their art career.
That is all I want. I got better using bases, and I hope those who want to pursue art as a career use bases to. It really does help. SO I don't care what you think of me and my traced bases. In the end it has made me a better artist.

Thats when you are tracing someones hard worked, original art that took hours upon hours to create. Base-makers HAVE to trace, so please learn how DeviantArt works before you comment

Faster Idea :
Step 1 : Make all the step to 11 (at the tutorial) but you have to make the lines white
Step 2 : Save it then go in there again
Step 3 : go to the features, open it and press ´´black and white´´ then press ´´OK´´
Step 4 : you can see the bakgrounds are black and the lines are white. select this art and press ´´white and black´´
Step 5 : Save it again and open it again.
Step 6 : Fill the lines and other like the last step
Hope this works. When not leave a comments and i'll make a tutorial soon. But check out my other steps (I only got one tutorial )

How to- paint over and recolor a screenshot and make it somewhat acceptable to be still posted on dA: traced bases. I am so incredibly glad you covered this in your description. While it is true that companies like Hasbro couldn't care less, it is technically still the same kind of violation and against the rules of this website just as using fanart is. It will just get less to no flame because no one bats an eye. But kudos to you for considering all of this, most people -especially other base makers- simply don't know. x)
I also like how you explained that tracing can help someone improve and to understand the basic things first, before completely drawing on one's own. One just should not forever entirely rely on bases and manage to jump away from them at one point. I however enjoy using bases every now and then, still. Not because I'd really need them, but simply because it can be fun (especially when I can't come up with own poses). ^^
About the erasing part, that looks like a lot of work. I always used to save the image as a 16 colors bit map and then paintbucketed everything white that was not lines (I did that with my pictures that I drew on paper to color them digitally). But then I came across an even easier method: Make the lineart pure black. Invert. Go to Image->Attributes and set the colors to black&white. Invert again and you are done, everything's clean. (I'm using the old mspaint. win7 might have other steps)
It might not be helpful to you, but maybe to someone who sees this.

I know the black and white color thing, and it is indeed very helpful and much quicker. I recommend this tutorial more for the artist who are just starting out, and might not understand the anatomy of a person (or pony) in a certain way.
But thank you for your kind words, and it is truly sad that some base makers don't realize that yes, in a way, this is stealing. If you just give credit where credit is due however, most people tend to not mind the use of their pictures for bases. It's all about the credit, and no one seems to understand that it is the most important thing to an artist.

It's not only about the credit, asking first sure would not hurt either. I am personally not someone who would mind much, but I think there are others who wouldn't like to see their work being taken, changed, and then offered for the whole internet for free use to further change it just like that. I saw artists who became very angry when they found their drawing being turned into linearts, and the linearts needed to get deleted, but I also saw people who were asked and then gladly gave permission.
