A sequel by DAW books had the Time Traveler foolishly return, get killed by the morlocks, who figure out the Time Machine, and invade our era ! They plunder the earth, turning Westminster Abbey into a slaughterhouse for human flesh. This causes a disruption of all history and earth is hurled into Limbo ! The hero of the story must destroy the Time Machine and reset the future back on its proper course ! But he must find the machine first !

A dire future indeed ! There was a chapter cut from the canonical text where after his escape from the Morlocks, the un-named traveler goes even further into the future, to find the stark dead earth of the End. The sun is a bloated red giant filling half the sky, the highest life forms appear to be flopping slime. Long ago man finally fell from his human estate and became but burrowing rodents... The Insect Empire ruled, and finally the slime.....
