Yeah I tried to draw it like the old map that was in the Hobbit book. Smaug looked very long and crocodile-ish in that

Call me old-fashioned, but I've always preferred the Smaug from that old animated Hobbit film by Rankin-Bass. Y'know, the one that looked part cat and all. I just can't picture any other version of Smaug, not even Peter Jackson's version.
But this is just as interesting as the one I grew up with. Much more original than the cliche look Jackson seemed to give him.

Yeah I was disappointed with the Jackson look. What I heard about what Del Toro was going to do with Smaug sounded much more interesting than cliche dragon.
That old animated movie is also what I grew up and had in my mind, for my Smaug I tried to replicate the little sketch that was on the map in the actual book, hence this long slender crocodile look.

Well Peter Jackson screwed up. Lazy, stupid. He could have done alot worse than using this great picture as his model.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the trailers Smaug looks pretty cliche dragon-like

Yes, very crocodilian! Lets hope they don't screw him up in the new movie. He needs to have four legs and two wings just like you render him here. Hollywoody have an annoying habit of giving dragons only wo legs, making them not dragons at all but wyverns.
