I'm pretty pathetic and stuck at step 2 D: How do you get your picture scanned to where it doesn't have the white background? I'm probably wording this wierd, but when I scan my drawing, it has the paper background right? Okay, so when I go to add the darker layer behind it, it doesn't show up because of the pictures original background. Was there some special way that you scanned or what? I've been trying to follow this tut. for months but I can't seem to even scan it right

OH WHOA, NO WORRIES I'M HERE TO HELP:

Making it dark like that (luckily) has nothing to do with scanning! All you do, is add a new layer, set that layer to multiply, and then you use the fill bucket tool with whatever dark grey color you want! Or, whatever other color you want!

OMG THANK YOU!! And I'm sorry to bug you with another question, but, what kind of brush do you use to make it look so painted-looking? Or is it just a normal brush with changed opacity? I've always wondered that, especially since your eye tutorial. Anyway, you are an amazing artist and I someday hope to be close to as good as you!! <3

I use a specific brush in my huge butt brush pack. If you like, I can give you a link to where I have it stored on my Google docs.

Would you? That would be wonderful!!! Thank you so much! And also, if i already shaded my picture before i scanned it, do i just go and overlay the color or still go black and white over it first?

I saw how ~WishIWould used this in a recent work and thought I would check it out.....it really helps me to understand shading a bit more, which I need muchly. Thanks so much for sharing

wooow thanx... i do my stuff on a white bg and find it takes me forever to build up a good contrast in my shading... but i really like how u use the grey bg

Wait, what is it exactly you're doing in Step 6? Repeating step 5, but on a different layer?

step six is where you start painting over everything. The multiply layer is a guide. The normal layer is covering your lines up.

What brush(es) do you use? I'm in limbo and trying to switch from anime to semi-realism and no matter how good I am at shading, it still looks like anime. I think I'm just using the wrong brush and there's a lack of texture..

It doesn't really matter what brush you use other than making sure your brush has opacity control by how hard or soft you press on you're tablet. The brush does not make the face, the face makes the face. Faces have a lot of hard and soft shadows on their features. If you showed me an example of yours, I could probably pin point the problem.

It's more his whole body than just his face...I don't really want to start over but I think it's damaged beyond repair. XD

This is completely unrelated to the tutorial itself, but I just adore your faces. The way you draw them (not just Link's face, either) is just so.... Agh, I would bow down to you if I saw you. I really truly look up to your style and its honesty. I don't know if that's the right way to describe it, but I'm gonna pretend that's exactly how it should be described.

As for the tutorial, I'm thankful you're willing to go to the trouble of showing how you do things with your art.

Can't wait for more!
Hm..But I am curious. Is this going to cover how to go from gray-scale to color?
