Description
Done for the latest issue of The Stool Pigeon. A little bit tweaked from the version that appears in the paper, but not by much. I don't think it really works that well, it was kind of rushed, so you might need to track back a couple of times to actually understand it.If you're in the UK you can pick up a free copy in one of the many many shops/clubs/bars listed here[link]

lol i love how the two men are virtually identical in the start very clever -- lots of creative storytelling, it is beautifully made.

You don't think it really works that well? This is amazing dude, I love the simplicity of it and I don't think it is confusing at all!

To be honest, it's impossible to tell until people read it and tell me whether it does or not. Interestingly, the ones I don't think work too well are usually the ones people dig most.

Great little story! And so true. The top took a sec to read, but everything makes sense in the end. The arrows are fine and it's good to see them repeated with the hairstyle change.
To read the top better, you could have the panels overlap more to try to get more of a zig-zag reading pattern. Or you could change each left to right narrative to a top to bottom one and keep them parallel (although, who has space for that).
Keep up the awesome!

Hmm, I like the panel overlapping idea. That's definitely something to bear in mind.
Thanks very much, I will certainly try to!

Brilliant. It's rare for a short form comic to tell an entire story and to tell it so well. You've outdone yourself, Luke.

It's definitely something I'm interested in pushing further, to strip away cinematic techniques and see how much story I can tell in a short space. It's surprising what you can get away with when you have faith in the reader to fill in the blanks.
Thanks a lot man, I'm very pleased you think so.

great read, splendid colours, lovely swanky drawing style, combined with tight Waresian composition and clever comic strip solutions. a great read, man. I'd love to have this in real

If I see a copy anywhere I'd pick you one up. I'm really annoyed with myself though that the printed version isn't quite as nice. In fact comparing them kind of highlights my technique of subtle colour layers on top of my originals which always feels a bit like cheating. But oh well.
Thanks dude, I'm glad you like it. I'm going to a talk by Chris Ware and Dan Clowes in a few weeks, I can't wait! Hoping I can absorb some extra skillz from the master.

aww darn, that's sad to hear. my printed versions so far have been succesful apart from 2 or 3 thingies. brown is a difficult colour to get right in print, at least in the stuff I tried to. and yeah, I have the same feeling with digital colouring and layers that I'm cheating, but in the end it does look nice. it's amazing how prints differ from images on the screen. also paper quality is important. some suck up all the ink, which makes the images look dull. I'm trying to paint, but it's really hard to make it look as good as it easily is with digital colours. it's just a lot easier and faster. thumbs up to jack teagle for that matter
HOLY MOLY, you're gonna meet those gods ? say hi from me , you have a great time, man, and suck up their secrets. Mike Mignola was the best I could do this year so far, but Ware AND Clowes, I can't top that
would be supersweet if you could fetch me a print. I think I dreamt about the comic

Yeah, I have the utmost respect for people who paint and do it 'for real'. I know I shouldn't belittle digital art, it is a perfectly legitimate technique in my opinion, but you can't help but feel a little guilty.
Hopefully so, I don't know how it'll play out but I think there is a signing thing going on. I'm just really excited to hear them talk though. I really like the look of Clowes' new book as well.

the difference is, and this is mostly a pity to digital artists, the artwork exists in real life with people who make it 'for real'.
I've probably said that before, but it's so cool to see 'originals'. original comic strip pages, wowie ! -> Moomin. but the end results can be both astonishing. digital art is not a lesser form of art, I just admire the original art a bit more ( call me oldfashioned ). I know a bunch of digital artists who are really good. good in what they do digitally, but they cannot draw and I think that's a bit of a handicap. it's most impressive if you master both artforms.
lately I do love it more when you can see when something has been made for real ( cut out paper, glued on stuff, markers, paint, .. ), although I colour my drawings digitally.
saw the lastest Clowes book in stores and it does look good visually. pretty vintage. haven't read it though

I like colors they are great as always^^
I didn't saw the arrows
at first,I noticed
them later after reading
the comment of
Osmosis Squirrel,
after I read the part
again with arowws it was a little bit confusing.
The way I saw it was that always two panels happing at the same time,if so you could leave out the arowws
and just leaving some more space between pictures.
What do you think of my Idea?

MumblingIdiot In reply to chiisana-no-neko [2010-04-23 20:46:40 +0000 UTC]
I think your idea is a good one. It's kind of ridiculous that you read it exactly how I intended it to be read and then when you noticed my guides for it to be read that way it was confusing.
I think spreading each 'couplet' apart from each other couplet could definitely work.

Anderjak In reply to MumblingIdiot [2010-05-12 01:07:42 +0000 UTC]
When a comic is assembled, it generally goes that two panels that are close together will naturally be read in sequence. Panels further apart aren't considered continuous directly to one another. So, for example, closing the gap between the first two panels vertical to one another and pushing the gap between the next couplet will push the visual flow a little better.
