Description
Strawberry Shortcake and WilyKit, from my post-Apocalyptic 80s toy storyline.Shortcake's the humorless leader of the Rebellion against Brainy Smurf. Never far from her is Kit, a strange, cat-like child found near her dead twin brother after the war. She's emotionless and mute, but follows Shortcake everywhere she goes.

Also saw your work from the article on io9.com.
Really great stuff. A lot of people say steampunk is cliche and old news, but I honestly haven't seen enough of it around to believe that. Most people don't even know what it is.
We need more steampunk/apocolyptic stories in mainstream entertainment, people, not less!

Thank you! I totally agree. It's funny, though--I'd been drawing characters like this for years without even knowing there was a style associated with it! I'm a little out of the loop.

I registered here to comment. IO9.com the sci-fi site linked your reimagineings of the 80s cartoon characters like this one and I have to say the concept alone is one of the best things I've seen in a while.
This is the kind of reimagining we could be using in Hollywood vs. just replaying the show filmed at night. I would love to see your concept come out in the form of a podcast-novel like 7th Son or the other successful ones should you ever bring the concept beyond the pictures you've drawn.
Oddly compelling to this kid that grew up int he 80s. Just such a rich story to play from. The 'Brain' as the reimagine of The Smurfs made me excited at the whole idea.
Run with it please if nothing else more than some great images that would make some great wall art in this nerds home office.

Wow, thank you, sir! I'm really honored!
I totally agree with you! I'm dying to break into Hollywood and start making stuff that people haven't seen before! I would LOVE to turn this story into something like that. Or a graphic novel, or a regular novel, or something. Rest assured I'll be trying my best to make something out of it!
I was a total toy nut as a kid, so toy nostalgia is HUGE for me! I'm having blast doing this series! Right now I only have a backstory and character descriptions written out, but I'm hoping to develop it into a more substantial story arc. If you know of any sites or companies that might be interested in seeing this, by all means let me know! I'm not exactly sure where to start. I was thinking of sending the whole thing to ToyFare magazine, just to see what they'd have to say.
Anyway, thanks again! I'll be posting new characters soon. And I'll look into posting these pictures as prints for sale (somebody else requested that as well). And welcome to DeviantArt! ^_^

seriously awesome. are you writing the story? or perhaps illustrating it as a comic? because the awesome levels on this project are in the red zone

MurderousAutomaton In reply to shaych03 [2010-02-24 07:41:47 +0000 UTC]
YES! I was shooting for the red zone! Thank you! I'm writing it and drawing it, but it's just in the design phase right now--I'm not really sure what medium I'll be trying to use for it. Comic book seems logical, but I'm not sure if I'm knowledgeable enough about that stuff to do it myself.

make copious notes and if you do it on the computer back them up frequently. as a writer, i cannot tell you how important it is to keep current backups of your story files available in case of catastrophe. good luck with the endeavor.
a comic book would be the most optimal format, however, it may not be feasible if the "story" portion is long... sometimes it's tough to pare down a long scene into one or two images. you may want to consider an illustrated fic - using your graphics as chapter headers, or placed within the text to illuminate a specific moment.
anyway, again, best of luck to you.

MurderousAutomaton In reply to shaych03 [2010-02-25 20:54:30 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Yeah, as a digital artist I know the score when it comes to backing up files! Learned it the hard way a few times!
Yeah, I kind of feel the same way on the story's format--besides the fact that I'm more of a concept artist and less of a comic artist, so I'm not sure I'd have the chops to make an entire comic book anyway. I'd love to see this as a cartoon or movie, but that might be jumping the gun! But we'll see! There's still a lot of work to do before I even get far enough to consider this stuff. For now I'm just gonna have fun with it.
Thanks again!

It's going great, I just need to put more hours in it, thats all.
It's a project I'm planning to submit to ZUDA comics online.
It's 8 pages.
I've penciled my first page, I'm going to see if I can get 4 pages done this weekend.
It's a story that kind of opens a time capsule from my childhood.
Like a crappy 80's kid movie that wasn't released in theatres.
Not that I'm saying any of my stories are worthy of ever becoming a movie. lol

That sounds sweet! I'd love to see that! What kind of story are you doing to tie all the characters together? It sounds really cool!
I love nostalgic things like that! I was abolutely obsessed with toys when I was a kid, so it was natural to do a series revolving around it! But I think I'm quite a bit older than you, right? Your childhood toys might be a little bit different than mine!
π: 0 β©: 1
shockwave-b2635488 In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-02-23 06:54:48 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, the toys I'm kind of basing them off of are around Late 80's Early 90's type stuff.
I'm doing a story that mainly revolves around two brothers with imaginations.
One kind of says the big idea's and the other writes them down.
But yeah, Other idea's may show from my personal background. I'm not sure.
I'm trying to do my best with 8 pages for Zuda.
It's tough trying to edit the story without taking too much of it out.

If you win first place $1000.

π: 0 β©: 1
shockwave-b2635488 In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2010-02-26 22:10:19 +0000 UTC]
the standard 8 pages, B&W or color artwork.
They tell you the dimensions about uploading them as pages for the site.
The right proportions.
They send you a W9 to fill out after you've gotten the email saying you're accepted.
I thought it was a cool thing to try out, seeing your name on a DC check can leave you feeling pretty good. lol

It was middle of June in 2009 I think.
It's called Sketch me Deadly.
It's a noir Spoof I did for an assignment at the Joe Kubert school.
I was one of the few who managed to finish it in class.

That's awesome! Congratulations! Your story sounds coo, too.
What do they do with it, then? Do they give you the money to continue the comic, or is it like they buy it from you, planning to do something with it themselves? In other words, do you still own the rights to what you submit?
