Ha! Basically. Thanks! I've always liked these monsters. I don't know why I don't draw them more often.

It's always like this with monsters... one moment you have dozens in your head and none the very next.
The worst part is that trying to force the creation makes you end up with bad designs... so frustrating XD

Ha! Very true! That's why it's fun to draw mythological monsters, since you can see how other people have drawn them in the past to give you guidance. That's actually the most fun part, I think, is interpreting a pre-existing idea or character in your own way.

If I may be blunt... what part of this thing is a tengu?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to PurpleKama [2011-10-26 02:33:52 +0000 UTC]
The... uh... tengu parts.
Tengu are basically bird monsters, so I did my own interpretation of a bird monster--with less of the humanization that tengu images traditionally have. ^__^

To the point you can't even tell it's a tengu anymore.

I suppose, but there's no rule to what any monster has to look like. I've seen other drawings of tengu that look like Egyptian bird-headed men with spears, and others that actually look more wolf-like. Artistic interpretation is what makes drawing mythological creatures so fun! I actually have a more traditional tengu in my gallery, too: [link] He's part of my Monster In My Pocket series!

Tengu? Yeah, they're one of those really old a varied myths, so I guess it depends on who you ask. They've been called monsters, demons, spirits, ghosts, etc. Whatever they are, they're freakin' awesome!

That, by far, is the most gruesome, horrid looking tengu I have ever seen! I LOVE IT!!! I love the interpretations that aren't historic. It expands the mind.

Thank you!!! Yeah, I figured "bird" and "monster" are the basic ingredients, so I might as well try over-baking it!
I've got another tengu in my gallery, too, as part of my Monster In My Pocket series--he's a little more traditional!

Yeah! Tengu rock! I love all that mythological stuff, any culture. I did a series of ink drawings of gods and heroes from all different cultures and time periods, but they're too big to scan. Dang.

Cool! I've been obessed with Greek and Egyptian myth most my life, and I came into the other cultures later. I like Norse a lot, though I'm not as familiar with it as I am with some of the others. I want to learn more about that and Japanese myth.

Cool! I don't think I recall that character--I'm mostly familiar with the major characters: Odin, Thor, Tiu, Balder, Siegard, Freya, Loki, frost giants, the dragon (don't remember his name), etc. Sounds sweet, though!

yeah man "Ouroboros" but i think its Jörmungandr in norse... not sure cause it does feature in heaps of different cultures - its the dragon that grows to such a size that it consumes its own tail by encircling the earth

Very true! I'd love for somebody (maybe me someday... why not?) to make a big budget mythology war movie. There's so much material to work with! A Norse one would be cool, a Greek one would be sweet... and Egyptian one would be crazy as hell! I'll get Hollywood on the phone and see what the hold up is...

MurderousAutomaton In reply to cthullhu [2009-09-01 07:36:51 +0000 UTC]
Yeah! There's so much material out of all the different cultures that would be cool--for Greek, the battle of the Titans and Olympians; Egyptian, Set murdering Osiris; Hindu, the Ramayana; Christian, the battle between Lucifer and Michael/Lucifer's fall out of heaven. They would all make cool comic books, too--though Spawn used a lot of the Christian stuff already. But epic would definitely be the operative word! XD

hell's yeah bud - i've always fantasised about a high-budget titan war epic though god of war 2 did have some fairly epic cut scenes of the sort
and im still waiting for someone to tackle the "angel's descent" in a truly epic fashion :/ every time someone tries it turns out cheesy :/
