Description
One thing I've always wanted to see, even before I was very into birds, was an inflated throat sac of a Frigatebird. They did not disappoint, especially on North Seymour where both Magnificent (photographed) and Great Frigatebirds breed. Some of them showed us the full display - wings flapping, bills clapping and competition between two males.North Seymour Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

What a glorious close up photo! Did they really allow you to come so close or did you zoom a lot? Fascinating to see the feathers divide into rows near the edge of the air sack. Feathers are arranged a lot more neatly on birds than one would think! I also never knew they had green iridescence on their heads. That's beautiful. I've only ever seen them in flight (or as a black blur in front of my face when they tried to, and sometimes succeeded in, steal fish from my hands), so that detail always eluded me.

Thank you! You could get pretty close, but we kept our distance as much as needed. Sometimes, the birds would walk or fly right up to us, so keeping distance was not even an option. They do not see people as a threat. Magnificent Frigatebirds have the green iridescence and Great Frigatebirds have more purple.

I've always wanted to see that as well. Congratulations on getting a great picture of it, too!
