I planned to make this tutorial for months but never got around to actually making it. I finally took the pictures while working on christmas presents.

If you have any questions, let me know!

Oh, and here are a few links to paperstar tutorials, in case you haven't tried to make them yet (I just grabbed a bunch of tutorials from the search, there are tons more out there ):

I've never heard about varnishing before but this looks great! I've just thought that making paper star jewelry was impossible without the paper changing form XD although, I'm not sure what Varnish is either 0.0 But that's probably just my English, I'll ask dad what it is in Norwegian

It's like a clear paint that dries colorless.

haha i'm so lazy that i just string them along a big string like a clothesline and then paint the varnish on. its very inefficient. thanks for the tutorial!

padoragon [2010-05-08 23:50:30 +0000 UTC]

what would you use to make them hard for jewelry?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to padoragon [2010-05-08 23:58:43 +0000 UTC]

That's explained in the tutorial and the deviation comment, 3 to 5 layers of non-toxic varnish.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

padoragon In reply to MyntKat [2010-05-09 00:54:03 +0000 UTC]

yes but what BRAND

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to padoragon [2010-05-09 01:21:10 +0000 UTC]

The brand doesn't matter, as long as it's real varnish. Read the comments, I mentioned different brands several times already.

Thanks for the reply I think I might test it out, see how it goes. I've been wanting to try out your tutorial for ages and Mod Podge is all I have in the house!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to BlueberryPhoenix [2010-05-08 04:44:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, as long as it dries to a hard, clear finish, it should work, I think.

BlueberryPhoenix In reply to MyntKat [2010-05-13 17:51:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, It didn't work so well, basically what said. Off to the hardware store for varnish XD

Thanks!

I use a similar method, but I do dollar store straight pins which I stab into two large half-spheres of styrofoam, dollar store again haha

I do valley to point star implalement as well, usually minimizes the chunky/droplet formation thing since it just runs down the needle onto the ball, but I really love the design of this! For a while I tried to make a 'drying rack' like you've got with all the little dimples but my wires would get twisted or the cat would knock it over and I'd frown, but this looks really sturdy, what gauge of wire was it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to Subtleknees [2010-05-05 00:17:01 +0000 UTC]

I later used two wooden blocks with wire wrapped around, like a clothing line really. Not sure which gauge I used, but it was pretty thin, it's the same wire I used to dry the stars on. Two blocks, one on each side, worked much better for stability.

Ahh, prototype designs

How many shoeboxes with taped elastics, wire, fishnet etc are lying around my house... no one knows. At least we've got a nice learning curve going on

MyntKat In reply to Subtleknees [2010-05-11 04:14:25 +0000 UTC]

There's always room for improvement, though I keep dreaming about a big device that doesn't need throw-away wires and that can simply be dipped into varnish and then raised for drying... yeah... not going to happen, but I'd love to have something like that!

Subtleknees In reply to MyntKat [2010-05-11 19:48:45 +0000 UTC]

Actually, my first attempts of varnishing involved some really awful gym-floor oil based varnish (lol), but I used these awesome thin barbecue skewers from the dollar store, about 14 inches or so, and THIN. Used to impale a bunch of stars and dip into a tall 'graduated cylinder' I kinda... -borrowed- from science class lol ^_^

They had the nice little circlet on the end so I could hang em up, was quite efficient, but the shit glaze I was using got them way too gooky and rendered them unusable after 7 or so 3-coat dippies. After some research I bought new glaze but the skewers were ruined, and the dollar store replaced em with bamboo ones

BUT you may be able to make a cool 'turntable' sort of deal with em. It was by far the quickest way to dip and glaze, just a rotary system by the time the last one was done its first coat the first one was ready for the second and so forth, If you're resourceful enough to design something like this, you should try devising something with the metal skewers! Its just hard to locate thin skewers, as opposed to the thick 'twisted' ones =/

Essay comment pah lol, but you reminded me of the skewers... maybe I should ebay it up XD

Wonderful tutorial, just what I needed! Can I ask what kind of varnish you use though? I always seem to buy the wrong kind and then end up returning it. I'd like to be able to get it right this time.
