Description
Mel Dalton, an old friend of ours died recently. For his funeral all his musician friends came to play. This man was in his 80s or perhaps 90s. They had played together a long long time ago and he wanted to say goodbye in the way he knew best.I loved this man, still able and willing to play some jazz.

the music's just a reminder
the spirit is in the sound
he's dancing in our ears
with sax and beats
we leave the ground
perhaps to dance
once more twice more
spin and bow to the crowd
wonderful image - well seen

He was very sweet. It was so dark in the room that I was lucky to get a shot at all. Something about the whole look made me do it.

Will good jazz just fade away with the musicians who championed their art or will It be homoginized into something other than what it was intended to be. Jazz is so improvised, its truely a performance art, with all the elements coming together to make a special soul or groove that only that musician can give to a piece. I'm sure as a musician he will be mised and as your friend I know he will be missed!

I do see 'good jazz' fading away. Perhaps it is the way of all types of music. Jazz musicians used to be passionate about their art, had many jam sessions and all night clubs where people could play and hone their art. Now it is mostly an academic activity that you learn in school (as if you actually could!).
As I think about it the same was true of folk music and country music. So much used to be done in small venues and local clubs, etc.
And now with Rap music... maybe it is still a music of passion... I'm not sure but it's big business and when that happens, you lose something.
Our friend will be missed because of his music but also because of his open and sweet spirit. he was just one of those guys who could play anything. He loved people and he loved all music.

Hi Yvonne, the dev art police are after you for what would appear to be an image in the wrong catagory! What the hey! I guess we are all supposed to suggest what catagory it should be in! Interesting and wierd!
