Really? How very gratifying!!!! I love it when the general public actually agrees with me on one of MY pieces! (And it happens so rarely, too! ) Congrats!

I sometimes find it strange what people like. But i also think that the folks here on dA come to expect a certain kind of work from a person (perhaps that is why they befriended one) and if it's not that kind... they don't know what to say or do with it.

But I'd say that photo has been universally faved... even by the anime artists. It's almost like I received a DD on it... weird. Because I rarely hear from the 'cartoon' crowd unless it is a DD.

Yes, I've found that to be the case, as well. In fact, I'm guilty of that, as well--I'll watch someone who does a few romantic pix...and then I'll have nothing to say when they do "dark" stuff. Or when they write poetry. I'm just not interested--no matter how good it might be.

Which only makes the "universal" pieces that much more gratifying! (And how funny that you're getting anime artists on that piece! I get quite a lot of them on my stuff, and I always sort of wonder why, although I assume it's the romance that appeals to them. I can't imagine a connection with this piece, though--so I guess it's just that it's Great, is all! )

(And I have to laugh at your casual mentions of DDs! I wouldn't know, never having received one. To the best of my knowledge, I've only even been suggested once...and the piece that was chosen was, in my opinion, a rather inferior example of my work, so I wasn't surprised it was ignored. I don't know what I'd do if I got one--I'm overwhelmed enough keeping up here, as it is! )

I've had three DDs which astounds me. Two of them were worthy...only one was I currenly LOVE. I do feel that the same people get DDs over and over and I'm not sure why that is. This one girl I watched was bragging about her 5th DD and I thought 'why her' when there are soooooo many really really good photographers here! She does technically good work but imho, it is rather cliche... and actually the 'same' in so many ways. It depends so much on who is doing the selecting of the DD. I occasionally suggest one I like but haven't had one chosen for a very very long time..years! The person currently doing the picking is a nice person but has a distinct style she likes... so that is what is chosen. I swear she hates color work! lol

I may sound a bit annoyed... but it is the general idea of the DD and how they get chosen...it's about who you know ultimately.

Oh yeah--I can definitely see that! I used to think about DDs a bit, and wonder why I didn't get one, when, as you say, some people are getting them with, well, let's face it, less-than-stellar pieces. But then I got over it. Art it subjective...and I've never been much of a mainstream person, so it's hardly surprising that my art isn't appealing to the mainstream, either. And I'm not really in the with "in-crowd" on dA...and yeah, it CAN be a bit of a popularity contest--so I'm not really surprised.

I AM, however, always pleased when someone I know gets one--especially when it's for a really good piece. (Kaycee and I had a big laugh, though, over one of her DDs! As you know, she really does superb work--and many, many of her pieces are of the caliber that I think would make DDs--and yet one that was picked was like the ULTIMATE dA cliche--in fact, I'd been teasing her about being assimilated by the Hive Mind, before it was picked--because her pic, while artistically good, of course--was SUCH a cliche! And then she got a DD--and people went WILD over it! It was really very, very funny! )

And it does make me sad when so many exceptional pieces are passed over for whatever reason...as there really are some amazingly gifted people on this site, who really deserve that extra recognition.

(And I think I know just what you mean about the person currently choosing! She's DEFINITELY got her preferences--which isn't to say she doesn't have great taste--she does!--but like me, actually, a little narrow in what appeals to her. Or so it seems, anyway. I'd be a bad picker, myself, I think. )

I actually think I would be really good at it. I'm very very eclectic in what I like and I never play favorites. he he... (that would be selecting DDs)... but I don't want the job because it is amazingly and horribly time consuming I'm sure! There are other things I'd rather pursue in real life.

That's funny about kaycee, ;D I know what you mean about her work and he cliche stuff etc... She's fantastically talented and one of the best of her style here on dA. she is absolutly seamless and so perfectly aesthetic. I was happy to see her get one for sure ...even if...

One of mine definitely did NOT deserve a DD... and I still don't know how it happened.. oh well... The other two are good but not better or worse than many many many others here.

Life on the internet and in clubs (real life included) is a bit of popularity, a bit of chance and a lot of a certain type of promotion.

I would actually imagine that you would be rather good at picking DDs--as even your own personal style is very eclectic. But as you say--it's probably a pretty miserable job--thankless, a pain in the behind, and horrifically time-consuming. (I honestly don't know how so many people devote so much of their time to this place--I really don't. It's very nice, socializing with other artists--but sheesh--shouldn't more of their time be spent actually CREATING art?? Then again, maybe I'm just jealous--because I can't create art AND keep up with dA properly. )

I so agree with you about Kaycee. Not only is she one of the best of her particular style here, but she's a genuinely nice person, as well--someone I'm delighted and honored to call a friend. (Plus, she's great fun to tease--she can dish it out as well as take it, and she makes me laugh out loud quite frequently. ) I get on her case every so often to get herself a decent camera and learn how to use it properly--because I would dearly love to see what she would do adding one more level of creativity to her art--but so far, I haven't gotten anywhere. I've got my fingers crossed, though!

Ain't that just the truth!!!!

I have often thought how much fun it would be to collaborate with her. I thought we could actually earn money by me doing portraits and then having her weave them into marvelous scenes. A long time ago I talked to her about it. But it never went anyplace. Still a great idea.

Regarding those who spend vast amounts of time on here.. well, I don't see that they have any other life! It's enough for me to just keep up with those I watch right now.

Athansor In reply to myrnajacobs [2007-11-14 10:45:11 +0000 UTC]

Oh goodness! I could definitely see that as being a money-maker, as well as just a whole lot of fun for both of you! Wow! What a terrific idea!!!! And kind of funny you should mention it, too...because even though I don't really do stock images, I've thought before that I would have absolutely no problem with her using my images in her work, and, in fact, would be honored, if she wanted to. There's just a sort of magic in the stuff she does...

I've often wondered if she was trying to pursue her art commercially at all, acutally. It seems to me that it's extremely commercial--like Thomas Kinkade or Cheri Blum's work. And I don't mean that in any sort of a negative way (although I'll admit that Kinkade's work is a bit too predictable for my taste!)--but just that her work is easy to appreciate...a bit sentimental, without being over the top, and has just the right amount of nostalgia to make it appealing on a large scale.

But then, it's so easy to think of what OTHER people should do with their art, isn't it?!

And I think you must be right, about people who spend so much time on here!

I love the birds and the dreamy feel and depth of field and even that you're calling les oiseaux "Les Parisiens"
This just makes me so happy. I wonder what the original image looked like?
Great lighting, too.
