lovely shot, I adore these blooms but mine usually are covered with ants before I get good shots

For some reason, there aren't so many ants on my neighbors.

It is one of my favorite flowers too. Fortunately my neighbor grows them. But it is a blizzard here right now ... so have to wait a few months.

I googled it, didn't know where I could find Michigan! It's on the left of the Erie lake, the place where you can find all those wonderful waterfalls!
I couldn't find much photo's of the state. Is it flat, or are there mountains, or hills?

myrnajacobs In reply to webworm [2007-04-09 18:35:38 +0000 UTC]

It is very much like Finland and the other Nordic countries...especially in the Northern part. It's gorgeous because of all the lakes. Lake Michigan is stunningly beautiful... and the lake I live on is a small one but the bluest blue you would ever want and so clear you can easily see 12 down in summer.

Nice to hear that, because I know what these countries look like!
Sounds like paradise!!!! Living next to a lake!!!!! Awesome!! Thanks for letting me know!!!
Sometimes Da is like geography to me!!! Still learning about our world!!

It is that way for me... and also lessons on plants, insects, dogs, cloud formations, history, ...goes on and on.

Oh and you asked if there were hills etc. The southern part of the state is quite flat with lots of farmland. Up here (which is the northern part of the 'lower peninsula') is hilly with a few short mountains. We grow fruit and some grapes. Huge Cherry orchards... and other fruit too. Farther north (in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan) it is a hunting and fishing paradise, very forested, lots of lakes and quite sparse in population. Very interesting place. [link] This is a link to a travel site about Michigan. It's quite a tourist destination .. and especially on the coasts and up north. Oh... and it's called Third Coast (as are all the coasts around the Great Lakes). The Great Lakes are huge bodies of water, inland seas really and have wonderful beaches, cliffs, etc etc. Some freeze almost over in winter.. much like finland etc.

I looked at the site about Michigan!! Very impressive. You've got dunes too!!! And a place called Holland! With a real Dutch windmill. And a place called Cadillac! (my son has got an old Cadillac). Beautiful landscape!!! I wish I was very rich so I could travel all over the world and see all these wonderful places!
Do you travel?

myrnajacobs In reply to webworm [2007-04-09 20:49:54 +0000 UTC]

Holland is very fun. They grow lots of tulips each year and I can't wait to go shoot a field of them! And dunes... oh yes, lots of huge dunes! I forgot about that! I live on what is virtually a dune. In order to grow anything but beach grass, I have to amend the soil like crazy. And Cadillac...well, Michigan was the state of Henry Ford, the first person to automate assembly lines so that cars could be made for the general public cheaply. Now the auto industry here is dying... costs too much in labor I think and we continue to not compete well with the Japanese, and European car manufacturers. Cadillacs are great cars. My son and his wife bought an old one and went on their honeymoon in it. It has since died but what a cool car to have for a while.

So now you know what Holland looks like!!!
My sons Cadillac is from the 50s or early 60s. Feels great to ride in it! Nice and very comfortable. He is the third owner of the car. It's light green.

*sigh...* I have to buy peonies, when I want them...well, if I don't count the silk ones that I have for photography props! You're fortunate to be able to see them au naturel...even if you DO have to wait a bit more for the experience!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

myrnajacobs In reply to Athansor [2007-04-07 17:29:30 +0000 UTC]

I've been thinking of buying some fake ones because I love them so much!

Athansor In reply to myrnajacobs [2007-04-07 17:39:17 +0000 UTC]

I'm not a fan of silk flowers in general...but I must admit that the silk peonies I bought as photo props are breathtaking--and reasonably realistic, as well. I say go for it!

myrnajacobs In reply to Athansor [2007-04-07 18:19:21 +0000 UTC]

I think they work well as props... and here in Northern Michigan in the winter..

LOL!!! I hear you!! I just used my silk clematis [link] , poppies [link] and wisteria [link] for a shoot this weekend, but the little girl I was shooting (ahem...young lady ) was too small for me to drag out the peonies....

myrnajacobs In reply to Athansor [2007-04-10 01:50:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh those look really really good! I adore the wisteria!

Athansor In reply to myrnajacobs [2007-04-10 02:07:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm a sucker for wisteria...and it just WON'T grow indoors--so silk it is! (And thank you! I can't wait to start working with them...and am still reveling in owning a camera--and lights--that allow me to have such terrific shots almost straight out of the camera. Amazing! )

Lovely shot - it makes me think of being a little girl and playing dress up! I know that may seem like a randon association, but my grandmother had pink camellias in her garden that looked similar to this, and I used to prance around playing fairy-queen among them........
