Description A singer at the Orange County Musician's Union Bash. Her look reminded me of pictures of Billie Holiday, the flower I guess.

did she sing like ms. holiday?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

myrnajacobs In reply to glassbreaker [2005-11-22 02:12:48 +0000 UTC]

Not that I could tell. She sounded a bit more like Ella Fitzgerald. I often wonder what Billie Holiday sounded like in person... it seems like her voice is distorted on the recordings.

glassbreaker In reply to myrnajacobs [2005-11-22 02:35:24 +0000 UTC]

really? i've never noticed...but , then again, i listen to a whole lot more of ella than billie...not that i don't love her, i do, i just don't own any of her music (and strange fruit is not exactly on the top 20 of any radio stations...)

She reminds me of Billie Holiday, too (I think you're right that it's the flower). As usual, your portraits inspire.

The expression of her face and the composition of the pic is gorgeous.
But I would prefer either slightly more light in her face or a more distinct background. Ýou are familiar with PS, I suppose--- It could be very interesting to try it out and change the lights, using spots....aso. But it's my preference, having strong colors and contrast. So don't mind my suggestion.

Lovely portrait. Everything works. Love the pearls (I think they're pearls) intertwined in the flower. Echoes the earrings. Nice work. Enjoy Thanksgiving!!

Enjoy the celebration, my friend. Two of my "little ones" are showing up to cook and paint. NJ daughter and fam are going to Chicago -- stepsister just had a baby. These blended family things cause all kinds of changes to the usual family celebrations. I'm just glad that two of the three are coming for Thanksgiving. I love this holiday!!!

I feel really bad because I used to joke that I wanted my children to marry orphans so I'd still have them at my house for holidays. My daughter married a man whose mother had died and his father died also a few years a go. Then my oldest son married and her mother died within a year of the marriage. Her father is still alive but lives far away. I've taken the spell off for my youngest son.. because it seemed so 'coincidental'... eek..

Thankfully there are no step bothers and sisters.

I'd be freaking out. They're dropping like flies. You may have more power than you know. I hope we are on good terms. Just kidding. My son had a brief marriage, and during that time informed me not to expect him and his wife at Thanksgivings. Sometimes they would come and sometimes not. Since his father and I had always alternated years on Thanksgiving, I just suggested adding my daughter-in-law's family into the rotation. I figured I could live with that. Didn't work for him/her, though. I was devastated. Things seem to have changed though, because he has a girlfriend who does a yearly t'giving thing for her friends and he chose to be with me and his sister. Girlfriend is taking the train to Sac on Friday. That's fine with me. Maybe he just has more appreciation of family now than when he was younger. Whatever it is, I welcome it. In the meantime, be very careful what you wish for. Scary business!!

Yeah... I felt horrible when my daughter in law told me her mother was dying of cancer! Her father is very ill too but I've taken my 'spell' off so it can no longer be my fault. Besides I like him a lot... he's very fun...used to be a public defender in LA.... now he's retired and coaches baseball.. LOL

It will be just my immediate family this year, one son and wife, one daughter with husband and two kids, and my other unmarried son... then my husband and myself.

It always seems like alot because we are noisy and buzz with activity! LOL
