They don't live so long for sure and that of course breaks my heart, but I've thought about this for so long and now realize this is Gods gift to human beings that every time we lose one of these little pals...it reminds us all of our own immortality and that our turn is coming too, so make the right decisions and prepare the way ahead. Act like everyday may be your last because one day...... it will be.
God bless you Phantom.

No matter how many other cats we have, losing one is heartbreaking. It also doesn't seem to be any easier whether a pet is very young or very old. Phantom wasn't that old, but she wanted to go outdoors, and she must have drank antifreeze. But, even when it's natural causes... I guess that's what we know we're getting into when we take them into our houses and hearts.

Our Phantom, a 5-year-old girl, is at the vet's now. How we're hoping that she will be back home and draped across Grandma again! She had such a dreadful night to get through!

She's sort of a petite version of our large ladycat Stormy, her older half-sister.

What happened to her?

my cat galena was attacked by a coyote. She might have to have her leg cut off.

With Phantom, it's her urinary system. We don't know why yet, as they are observing her and making tests. So, we're not in the clear because, if there's too much damage, she will have to be put to sleep. That would be so heartbreaking!

At least her illness isn't as traumatic as being attacked by a wild animal!

We do have wildlife here in the city, including opossums aka possums, HUGE raccoons, and falcons (especially kestrels aka sparrow hawks). There are coyotes in this region, too; some have been sighted as near as the area around our hospital. Since that's the other side of town, we're hoping that we won't have them showing up here, as there is a lot of wooded places where they could stay. In fact, one night while driving home, a very large animal crossed my path; I pulled over at a gas station to see what it was and was stunned that it was a fox! I've never seen one that big, and it seemed to be studying me as it stayed on the little rise, with me watching it from near the hood of my car~making sure I stayed close enough to the open door to retreat if necessary. Then, it trotted down the other side of the rise, and I figured it was heading toward the woods bordering our city on nearly ever side.

I hope that Galena won't have to have an amputation! However, I have seen animals handle the loss of a limb, moving around as if is was the most natural thing. While at a reenactment event, I met a man who had with him a two-legged dog~missing front and back legs on the left side. I was "blown away" that this animal could walk, run and interact with people as if he had all four limbs. Animals generally are far more adaptable than "hoomans".

I will be thinking of Galena and hoping the best for her. Pets in peril: It doesn't seem at all right, does it? Good luck!

That's very true. Phantom definitely is Grandma's kitty. Finally, she lets me pet her after all this time with us. Mom has varicose veins, extremely bad and painful, so she has to lie down a lot. The cats battle to see who is going to get a place on the couch AND on their Grandma.

For me, it's the pillows next to where I work on my computer and watch TV that is the valued place.

Phantom is a true character. She made up her mind when she was a kitten that she was going to live in the house, so she came in and went into hiding. Later, when she knew she had a place with us, she did like the other cats: found many places to curl up, including on top of my mom~their Grandma.

aww ^^ we got bandit as a kitten and we have three dogs so he grew up with the dogs, he runs after cars with them, we taught him to sit, he begs, he generally thinks he is a dog.

She's our Phantom of the Garage, named that because, as a kitten, she ran into the house and refused to come out. She would sneak out to get food and water and to use the litter boxes, then, as soon as we were in sight, she would go into hiding again. Well, she had been indoors for quite a while and had never let us touch her. One day, Mom did catch and put her outdoors because we were trying to keep down the number of cats. Mom said that it broke her heart when Phantom was crying at the door, but eventually the kitten went about her life. Mom kept feeling so guilty that I finally caught Phantom and brought her back indoors. Here she's been with us ever since though, after she was "fixed", she died venture outdoors again during the spring and summer. She is so showy with her affection and so vocal that she makes us laugh from all of her "cat chatting". At least she isn't as loud as other other black cat, Stormy, the sister of Sunny (actually Stormcloud and Sunshine).

The cats often bicker about who gets to sleep on the couch with Grandma and are even fussier about who lies on top of Grandma!

That's just what I said when I walked into the room and saw that image. I immediately grabbed my camera and promised Mom that I would show only a little of her. She's as camera shy as I am though I think she's much more photogenic.
