Description PASTELS! *PUNCH*

This was my test to see how fast I can do an artpiece with my thumb. Good and bad news. Good news was that this took no more than a week to finish (by then I was nearly done with my other piece that I did). Bad news is that my thumb is kinda strained, lol. But its not doing too bad, so I'm on the road to recovery! I might start up on commissions soon.

In other news, behold yet ANOTHER animated obsession for me! I saw "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" a few weeks ago and its been taking over my mind ever since. This movie was just so many different shades of awesome, it was a veritable Da Vinchi of animation. It was a WHOLE lot better than I went in expecting it to be. And for the first time ever, an animated film beat out the residing Pixar film for my favorite animated film of the year. "UP" was great and all but this...was just way better. More my cup of tea anyways.

And behold my new OTP, Flint Lockwood and Sam Sparks! I keep saying I don't consider myself much of a romantic, but these two were just so cute together, even before they met in the movie. I've also said this before; I LOVE inventor geeks!! And Flint has managed to hyperactivly twirl his way up towards the top. I don't say this about guys much, but he's just so gosh darn CUTE. WHERE'S MY FLINT, DANG IT??

Anyways, I chose to make my speed art of CwaCoM to hopefully help appease the obsession gods in my head. The only real cure will be when the DVD comes out and I can watch it till the obsession abates, but this will have to do in the meantime; I'm too broke to see it any more in the theaters (have seen it three times). Although I do have a little sister who works as a manager for a theater...and there's a three dollar theater also in the area...hm...

While I LOVED the movie's art style, I couldn't copy it quickly enough for my experiment, so I just tried to adapt the characters for my own style. Worked out pretty well. I was expecting Flint's hair to be super hard, but it wasn't too challenging (except for the shading; that was a killler, lol). What was hardest was his facial shape and mouth; it took ages to get it in my style and still look characteristically Flint. Sam's shoulders came out a little wide and her hips a little small though...but oh well. Flint himself is actually a little tall himself, but the lanky look really fits for my style and himself anyways. Sam's trousers were supposed to have that striped texture, but after several attempts I gave that up. Might try again using the burn and dodge tools, I love them.
And I have to say I just LOVE Flint's hair. Total fun, lol. I also tweaked Sam's a bit; its still the ponytail she has for the last half of the movie, but I have a hairdresser for a mom and she has resulted in a hairdresser in my head. My head hairdresser had problems with Sam's short bangs going perfectly into a ponytail cause MY hair never behaves like that; and if mine won't no one else's will gosh darn it, lol.

Background was sorta inspired by the ice cream scene, but I didn't want anything too complicated. So while I could have done some vector ice cream scoops, I just did a bunch of pastel circles and had fun with the burn and dodge tools. The characters aren't really in any situation; they're just kinda in some zero-g hangout. XD I was just doing random poses.

Also threw Flint's pet/friend monkey Steve in, just cause Steve almost always goes where Flint is, and I wanted to see if I could draw a monkey. I don't like monkeys much, they have too much sick humor surrounding them in movies, but this monkey was kinda cute (with that one exception). Also they did a great job of translating what a monkey would probably think.

Funny story: I was trying to draw this mainly from memory, but realized I had to use references because I couldn't remember ever seeing what shoes Flint wore. Needless to say when I saw them I had to smack myself in the face with Duh, and if you've seen the movie you'll understand why they should have been obvious, lol.

CwaCoM is copywrited to Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures, etc. PASTEL PUNCH!

I thought it was great. They did a very good job blending in the original source material, which was a little scant with no real characters, and make a nice story form it.

Totally! Pixar is still my animation god, but looks like Sony is really trying to give them competition, lol.
Although they might meet their competition in the form of Disney. Three cheers for going back to classic animation, 2D, and music! Lol, and I see you have it on your mind too, what with your avatar pic and all. ^_~

The pairing in this movie is about as cute as it gets too, lol.

The movie actually acts as a sort of prequel to the book. Basically, they were trying to explain WHY food fell from the sky, lol. But yeah, the book is really good. Gotta love the classic children's tales.

Not to get picky (the art is fantastic, I just know you like to get stuff right), but you forgot the shoelaces Flint drew on his...um...shoes to make them look more like...well...shoes. XD

Flint has his characteristic happy, energetic, and slightly nervous look about him, while Sam looks bright and perky. Nice job.

Hehe, I so love his geek shirts. ^_^

Lol, I actually realized I missed the laces right after I uploaded this, but felt too lazy at the time to fix it.
What cracks me up about those is that Flint invented those shoes to be laceLESS, then draws laces ON them later. XD

Love the happy, energetic, and slightly nervous part of him, lol. So funny. And perky Sam is so cute. These two just fit like salt and pepper. ^_^

Oh yeah, I want all of his shirts! Maybe not the tux one; that's hilarious, but I'd rather just wear a dress, lol.

I didn't care as much for the movie as you and your twin obviously did, but I thought they were really cute too.

I liked how Sam turned out. I agree, her hair went back into that ponytail way too easily. I can't get mine to do that without a comb or brush to get the bumps out, and I'll still have those flyaways. And my hair's at least twice as long as hers.

If you wanted a simple background, you should have made it orange. ^_^

Cute pic! Very glad to see you're getting back into your grove, your webcomic fans have missed you.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mystryl-shada In reply to SharmClucas [2009-10-29 19:09:34 +0000 UTC]

At least the movie was funny right? Love funny (clean) movies.

Lol yeah! Hair doesn't behave that way! They do it all the time in animation, lol. Bugs me to death. So she now has wispy bangs with her ponytail as my way of protest, lol. I think it looks better than a hard hairline anyways, but I've always been a fan of bangs.

Ohhh yeah...orange...duh, lol. XD

Once I get my hand strengthened for extended arts, I'll definitely swing back into webcomic. I'm already tinkering with drawing some for backlog.

SharmClucas In reply to mystryl-shada [2009-10-30 02:59:11 +0000 UTC]

That came across wrong, I need to not reply when I'm tired. I liked the movie. It was funny, and the main characters were really cute. I just wouldn't want to see it 3-4 times in one month like you and your sister. ^_^;

The hair in animation always bugged me too. Love the fringe on Sam, very cute.

I love having you drawing again, but BE CAREFUL! You won't heal properly if you push too hard, and I know you'll try. Better to rest too long than to damage something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mystryl-shada In reply to SharmClucas [2009-10-30 06:32:53 +0000 UTC]

Lol np, I know you enjoyed it. One doesn't have to be obsessivly nuts like HHB Boomaster and me to enjoy a movie, lol. We're usually the exception to the rule.

Glad you like though!

Uh...*looks sheepish* OK, I'll go easy on the sketch project I just started then, lol. I was mainly doing it to work out my hand without worrying about accuracy anyways. But yeah, I need to be careful about pushing it. I'm just so happy to actually be working on art, that I'm tempted to push too fast. I'll keep it low though and work up.

Lol the movie is great. Not all my friends liked it, but I thought it was a well written film. It was a lot more involved than I thought it would be, and the transition from "cute film about food falling from the sky" to "full out weather disaster flick" was great, and still managed to stay funny the whole way through. And the characters were fun; character is a good chunk of why I like a movie.

Yay, you noticed the hand holding, lol. That originally wasn't intended, but it just kinda happened. They're so cute that way, I dunno.
