Description
~I hereby give permission to *DesigningDivas and ~GIMPtacular to display this workChangelog:
This tutorial will teach you how to create a planet using Gimp, the open-source version of Photoshop.
I did my best to turn this tut into a real cake recipe, so i'm sure you won't find any problem in learning how to create your own planets.
The file is in PDF format and has 8,5 Megs. I know it's big but it is because the tut is very illustrative
If you have any questions feel free to post them here
Have a good reading, as well as a pleasant space travel

It actually ended up fine. I wasn't using your entire tut to make my planet, but I couldn't figure out how to make the lightened side look better, but thanks to that one part of your tutorial I managed to get the gist of it. Plus we had our imaginary suns in the same places, which made it even easier once I figured it out xD
Take a look at mine and tell me what you think! I don't think it's quite as good as yours, but still

hay do you know how to use the clone tool on this program cuz i cant figre it out

Select the clone tool in the main window (or press C), choose the fussy brush marked in red in the tab window. Hold Ctrl and click on any area of the texture to create a "sample" for the clone tool, release Ctrl and paint the edges of the texture marked in red to get riddle of them. Without this procedure the surface of your planet will be like a ball with small pieces of paper sticked on it when you turn the texture into a sphere later.

I've seen and used other planet making tutorials for The GIMP, but this by far, is the most detailed and easy to customize off of. I used this a while ago and even though it's a little out-dated the steps can still be applied to the current version of The GIMP (2.6 at the time this was written). Plus the steps given are for really high-def planets which is never a bad thing. So I just wanted to say thank you for all the time and effort you put into this.

Thank you so much for your tutorial. I'm in the process of experimenting with each step as I try to enhance the planet as much as possible. Some planets I may bump, some not. Some planets may have a thick atmosphere, some may have a thin, some may not have one at all. Some may be rocky, some watery, some gaseous, some Earth-like. I just wanted to let you know that the detailed explanations on each step helped a great deal and I hope to show you some of my work when it's done.
The first planet in this series of experiments has a mainly iron crust, and is far from its sun. For this purpose I thought to put the bump layer on "Screen" instead of "Overlay." It looks great so far and I will send you the link when I am finished.

Unzip the .zip file first. Then you must have a PDF reader, such as Adobe Reader , installed on your PC to read the tut

Ok, let's do it:
1) Download the Creating_Planets_in_Gimp_by_humanofprey.zip
2) This is a compressed file of Creating Planets in Gimp - Reviewed and Updated.pdf. You need to uncompress it in order to read it. Download and install Winzip to extract the tutorial.
3) Since this tut is in PDF format you need a PDF reader to read it. Download and install Adobe Reader. Once the installation is complete, simply double-click on the tutorial to read it.

Specifically what step are you confused? The part you turn the surface texture into a sphere?

N7Dovahkiir In reply to Eri-Blossom [2009-11-05 00:45:16 +0000 UTC]
The most important thing to remember before using the filter "map to object" to turn the surface texture into a sphere is to make sure the width and the height of the working canvas have the same values. If not you will have a 3D egg instead of a sphere, no matter what is the size of the planet you want to create. When you define the size of the working canvas when you create a new image, the width and the height of it must have the same value.
Another thing to remember is the planet's size i used to create this tutorial is 4000 x 4000 pixels. If you are working with small resolutions you must reduce the values of the "gaussian blur" filter when you work on the shadow and the atmosphere. Play with the values until you reach the desired result. If not, press Ctrl + Z to undo the filter and try again.
I hope i could help you. Any questions, feel free to ask
