There is a tiny bit of pink background under her arm... Other than that, it's pretty good!

This is actually the first tutorial I've found that deals with the application of other dress/fabric material into the manipulation. While in the first part, I'm more likely to use photoshop's layer masks to eliminate the model's background (I always find that I may have erased something far beyond my history list in high res pictures). Even with that, I will try your method the next time I'm not happy with the skirt of a model's outfit. Thank you

I'm really not a tutorials person and hate reading instructions (I don't even read the manuals of stuff I buy most of the time!) but this does look quite good. I'm going to give it a try and see if I can improve my manipulation skills. Thanks for posting this!

lol but it does make sense? <3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-07 07:46:46 +0000 UTC]

Sure, it makes sense
And almost every technique explained I consider wrong and never use for doing manips. That's why I thought it was funny!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-07 10:33:12 +0000 UTC]

so you think I make manips the wrong way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-07 13:23:01 +0000 UTC]

No, that's not how I'd put it. I think there is no 'wrong' or 'right' way of making manips, only what suits and what suits not the person who works; and the technical efficiency of the ways preferred.
To me the wrong ways are the ones that negatively affect the technical quality level.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-07 13:28:01 +0000 UTC]

Very true. we make manips our own way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-07 13:35:44 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Except that I absolutely disagree with the use of the eraser for cutting things out. It's good when you're a beginner, of course. However the Pen tool method is the absolute best, even if it takes a bit more patience No need to blur edges, too. (Blurred edges are ugly.)

And there are other things that help improving quality, like doing colour adjustments on each layer rather than choosing auto color, which generally gives extremely little control over the result.

Ah, I could babble on and on..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-07 14:47:46 +0000 UTC]

Okay, You've got your way and I've got mine. why do people have to attack me on the worst days...? and I rarely use the auto color.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-07 20:24:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sorry you interpreted this the wrong way.
My point was nowhere near attacking you, rather helping by giving advice. My apologies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-08 06:53:53 +0000 UTC]

okay, I just hate it when people call me like a beginner when I've been photomanipulating since before I turned 13. and I'm okay with critique as long as they dont mention that I'm doing everythinf beginner like. either way, I still do things my way and you do things your way.

and apology accepted.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-08 08:01:35 +0000 UTC]

Ah, sorry again. Misinterpretations all the way - I didn't call you a beginner, it's just the oddities of language This tutorial is for beginners though, I suppose?

What I meant was - eraser is good for beginners, but more advanced manipulators usually avoid this method as it doesn't provide quality enough. In terms of quality, your works are pretty good. Still even the best manipper in the world has room for improvement, and new techniques are what helps us on the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-08 08:17:39 +0000 UTC]

But there are so many advanced manipulators who still use the erase tool. I always use the selection tool before erasing some areas. and the auto color manipulators like *sheispretty use it all the time. Always room for improvement. Actually, I do almost things I did in the tutorial in my manips. so you pretty much called me a beginner. Maybe I still am. so what do you recommend I do to be at least an intermediate manipulator?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Simbelmine In reply to NajlaQamber [2007-11-08 09:27:01 +0000 UTC]

Well, I didn't meant to call you a beginner, so apologies once again. Looks like I have a problem communicating my ideas to you properly without offense. Sorry about that.

I think that only you yourself can decide whether you feel like a beginner, advanced, pro or any other of those labels. Even if others call you a pro, on the inside you might feel otherwise.
Giving advice is tricky, and I don't think me or someone else is the one to tell the right things to do.

To me, however, one of the most important things is - always challenge yourself and try to be even better with every piece you make. It is not important if we can outdo others, much more - if we can outdo ourselves. It's the key to excelling - never be satisfied enough with what you achieve, never stop moving on. I learnt this from Luka Skalabrin , who I had the honour to know, collaborate with a little and share ideas. The things he taught me have been simple and few in count, but great in idea.

Another thing - don't stop exploring and using new techniques. That's how we all grow - by experimenting. At first I thought the pen tool is a real pain to use, but since I've learnt it, I can't imagine a more efficient way to cut objects. Same with other little tricks and tips we learn on the way! The path of improvement is endless, no wonder there is the saying "Live and learn."

I really hope I haven't been too depressing. I like involving into discussion, especially about things that matter, and nothing of what I've said here should be taken personally or as an offense, because that was never my intent.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NajlaQamber In reply to Simbelmine [2007-11-08 10:06:26 +0000 UTC]

I have no problem challenging myself. I do experiment alot. and I still need improving, i know this. I've tried different techniques including the pen tool. actually the pen tool was my first cut out tool. then i started using other things besides that. and I've never stopped experimenting. and its pretty obvious if you've seen my gallery.

You were depressing. but you didn't anger me as much as other people usually do. So don't mind. since you were only trying to help.
