Description Another commission, this time for =Amaris--Miakoda , who asked me for a picture of her pretty mare Keilantra.

I hope that my shading skills are improving, I know they could use some work still but I'm trying. I used a new grass method as well.. I'll keep looking for ways to improve.
(my mountain-drawing skills also need some... well, help )

Spent a lot of time listening to The River Sings by Enya while doing this picture. Her music really inspires me.. and Keilantra's personality seems to fit nicely into it.

Thank you for the commissions you bought, I hope you like this!

Didn't you use a reference?

Not for this piece, no. I would have provided a link and credit if I had, nothing bothers me more than seeing a stock provider not being thanked for their work.

Oh I'm sorry! I had a picture in this book that looked similar, but wasn't the same pose. Sorry. Very nice work. I like your shading style.

Well, I've been watching for a pretty long time now(although I rarely get a chance to comment) and I can definitely see some improvements. Not only the shading, but the anatomy and the background itself show some improvements.
I don't know if you're looking for some advice here so I won't give you, but if you do, just say so and I'll give you some suggestions.

About the work itself, I'm completely in love with the colors and Keil's pose, she looks absolutely lovely.
Gorgeous work, it's probably one of my favs from your gallery now!

Hehe seems like we're both too busy to comment, I rarely do either!

I'd appreciate some suggestions (but do try to keep it light on critiques, since I know where most of the visible flaws are ) I wish I had made that grass softer and given the sky some clouds, now that I've looked back at it!

Okay.
First of all, sorry for the late reply, I haven't been around.

So for suggestions...
The grass actually looks soft enough, wouldn't hurt to be a little softer like you said but it looks good like this.
Next time you do a work like this keep in mind that things get less defined the farther they are from you. I don't know if the grass goes all the way to the base of the mountains, or if there's a cliff between them. But if it goes until the mountains' base then it should also get a little darker to give the work some more depth.
The same goes for the mountains, it would give this a great effect if you had added some less defined/detailed, almost only silhouettes of more mountains behind the ones you drew, it would also give this more depth.
I wanted to search for some photo references for what I'm saying, but I don't have time now, though I do have a work of mine that kind of illustrates what I'm saying [link] . It's kind of old now, but I was looking to work a little on depth on this work, I hope you can get what I'm trying to say from this.

It's pretty much the only "big" flaw I see here, the sense of depth. But I see that you're really improving on your backgrounds and little by little and with some work, I'm sure you'll get them looking beautiful, just thought I should give you some suggestions to help you on that

Hope I wasn't too harsh here, I simply love your works and am greatly enjoying your improvements so I really want to help on that

Thank you for the tips!
I see what you mean about depth, my images are usually very flat. I'll work on it in my next ones!

Its nice to get some input from other people. I'm planning to take some drawing classes next year to help improve my skills also, up until now I haven't had any serious art teachers so most of my experience comes from my friends here on DA.

On to the next commissions!

You're most welcome

Well I've never had art classes, so all I know is from help and advice from the artists and friends I have here and on Elfwood. But I guess some more help is always welcome

Good luck with your comissions then hun!

This pose and the background are both very well-done...I guess I haven't been watching you long enough to really tell, but it seems to me that your shading's getting better and better. But the one thing that I really want to know about this piece is how on earth you made that lovely texture for the grass. o.0; Love the sporadic little flowers in there too. I think the overall composition of this serves as some serious eye-candy, too, the way her tail sort of parallels the mountain's slope...*rambles*

Thanks! ^^

And to be honest, I cheat when I do my backgrounds. Photoshop supplies so many brushes, I just choose a bunch of different green shades and mix and match them all.

Photoshop's best brushes are the ones that emulate real brush tips that you would use with guache paint or acrylic. It's not cheating. xD

Oh my GOSH, this is AMAZING!

I was expecting it to just be a standard side on view, but i love the pose you chose for her! It makes her look so cheeky and daring, like she's taunting the viewer to chase her xD The way her tail is flagging up like that really adds to the portrayal of her personality :3 And her expression is adorable.

Her colours are spot on, and the shading on her body is quite captivating :3 So many undulating muscles, it's really lovely. The shading on her tail is my favourite though xD *licks it*

The bg...aaaahhh,that grass looks edible xD Those mountains are awesome, whatchoo talkin' about huh? :3

Best $5 i ever spent, thank you! <3 I'll note you with my email address for the big version and with details for the next ones :3

Glad you like it, I really had fun on this picture!

I also noticed that I forgot her blackbird, if you want I can edit that in too. Sometimes I get so busy with making the background I completely leave out the last details that are actually pretty important!
