There actually is an easier way to do this. Your method's pretty creative and works just as well but it's a pain to place the model back exactly where it was before. Here's how I usually do it:
1. Keep all materials selectable
2. Go to the edit (E) tab of your PMX editor, not the PMX view tab
3. Tap Vertex (V)
4. Tap Select alone (none-reference plane) vertex (F)
and then simply delete what the program has filtered out for you. It's still really nice of you to help people out with your tutorial. I dunno which method's better but it's good to know both right? ^^
