Description
Someone asked for a tutorial about sphere maps, and at the same time I thought it would be worthwhile debunking some of the misinformation that's floating around about what these types of graphics actually are and how they are used.More info (if you want the maths): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphere_mβ¦
CREDITS
Image used for example sphere map from wallpapersup.net/
Model used is my own edit of the default Meiko Sakine
Errata
Made some minor corrections (12/14/2012)
Note also that if you're model a PMX model, there are more options with what you can do with a sphere map.

Well, this isn't exactly what I was looking for, but maybe you can help me?
I'm trying to put a texture on a primitive sphere that I made using PMXE's primitive view tool, but no matter what I do, I can't seem to move or scale it so that the part of the image i need is visible. It's just a face surrounded by a background (to prevent it from tiling around), but all I can get is the background.
EDIT: idk what's up with this thing. it's like it just chooses one pixel to apply to every single plane at once. if i move it around enough the whole thing changes color as it goes over different parts of the image, but that's it.

Use the UV Mapping Plugin or texture your sphere using a proper 3D modeling program. For a sphere, an external program is probably better. Try Blender.

Hiya, thanks for the tutorial. I know it's been a few years, but I was just wondering if you know of any other requirements for spheres? I can apply them to some models, but the things I've made myself just go white or black or do nothing. Do the models need something to help with mapping?

Trackdancer In reply to Zatnik [2016-05-01 19:16:27 +0000 UTC]
Nothing needs to be done with reference to mapping. Sph and Spa maps are overlays/underlays that moderate the way the textures/materials are drawn and how they interact with the game engine lighting.

Thanks. That's a shame, I was hoping I had missed something. Cheers for the tute by the way. It's clear, concise and contains enough info to get somebody started.
(Just as a rant, not because I feel entitled to assistance: Spheres work fine for me /unless/ I have had the mesh in blender. Even in the same pmx as geometry which has working spheres, and pasting the material! It's very frustrating.)

I'm trying to add a sph file to my model, but it's not showing up on the model no matter what I do to it. Do you know how to fix that?

Make sure you selected the '+Addition sphere' option.

hrmmm, do you perhaps know what to do or know what it means when the red text appears about the area you type the texture and spa/sph name in? It only happens on some materials (like a hair I made in meta) Β : \ But I can't ever find a tutorial covering what to do if this happens.

Can't really comment on this as I've never seen this happen.

Dop, it has been solved !! Apparently the name of the file can be too long but still work on other materials with the unchanged name lol.

Looking into SPA files - those are more interesting. Dang MMD has no documentation anywhere. Not even in Japanese apparently.

I can reflect back to June 2012 and where I was with MMD. The progress
made in part from these tutorials is priceless! It's much more than a good read, if one chooses to retain and utilize this information. If not, then they are just not paying attention!

Thanks
Honestly, I don't take myself too seriously. What I present in my tutorials, I hope is accurate information. At the very least it's what works for me. I've had people write to argue with me about the way I do certain things and honestly, if they think they can do better, they can go write their own tutorials ...

Trackdancer In reply to GM34 [2012-12-24 13:47:57 +0000 UTC]
I don't know about a virtual shock button, but did you know that the makers of 3D custom girl makes an accessory that can be attached to a computer that ... how shall we say this ... allows a certain part of the male anatomy to be connected to the computer and "interact" with the 3D custom girl models ... nuff said.
Oh, how do I know this? When I was researching that company's stance on the use of their models in MMD, I dropped by their website. And one of the few things that they had translated for their market was instructions for the use and cleaning of this device in English ... you go figure ... the Japanese can be so scary when it comes to certain ideas LOL.

Wow. Thank you for listening to my request for this tutorial. So are .sph files just for adding a reflective look to materials or are there other uses? And are they related to .spa files?
π: 0 β©: 1
Trackdancer In reply to larkal [2012-12-17 07:05:35 +0000 UTC]
.SPH files are used for the purposes outlined in the tutorial.
.SPA files are a little different. I'm looking into the technical details for the format; I know what they're used for, just trying to get the information on how it works. They're similar to bump maps, but there are some differences.

Hey ! that really clear and easy !
can you make a tutorial on phisics, 'cuz ... I suck at phisics ... I have a model and there a lots of problems, could you help me ?

There are some really good tutorials on MMD physics already by other people here on DA that know a lot more about that area than I do. If you go to the Citrus-smoothie website, they should be listed in the tutorials section.

π: 0 β©: 1
Trackdancer In reply to kanabou [2012-12-15 19:31:08 +0000 UTC]
Falling hair only happens if the joints are not correctly attached to bones. Best way to understand this is to look at one of the default models (Neru is best for this) and see how the bones, physics and joints are associated with each other. Once you grasp how it works, it's relatively straight forward to duplicate the process on other models.

kanabou In reply to Trackdancer [2012-12-16 07:33:09 +0000 UTC]
wow that looks pretty tough... How do you attach joints ? I'm sorry : i am annoying you with my question ..
π: 0 β©: 1
Trackdancer In reply to kanabou [2012-12-16 07:39:31 +0000 UTC]
Once again, there's a tutorial on DA on how to add joints and associate them with bones. Physics is actually quite simple straight forward, but a pain to explain (which is why I've not done any tutorials on it - don't want to end up writing a book).
If you spend some time searching through DA and YouTube, there's enough info around for most people to get a good grasp on how to do physics in MMD. It does take awhile to get the hang of it.
