Description
Lame title. I wanted to say "How to cel shade : When you have 50 pages to do in 20 days" XD;;. I used this 'method' and finished 32 pages in 22 days though... True story. So it HELPS.I made this a while back and it's posted over at my artblog: [link] .
Now you can all see how I cheat making my comic pages... I had to make these for the class I taught way back and I'm thinking of compiling them into a mini tutorial book. These aren't the end all be all steps to take to do a comic page, it's just how I work. Pardon the typos, ranting, and run away commas. Artists don't need to know how to write until we get to do those damn text bubbles...

This was super duper helpful. I'm slow as all get out and this really de-mystified an easier process for me. Thanks!

This is an eye opener. I never do well with cell shading so hopefully your method will help me out. Also, I love your comic! It really does look like professionally made.

Your backgrounds are one of my favorite things from Fungus Grotto.

I really admire your art, and it's great that you've given us a peek into how you work. Especially since I'm a retard with Photoshop.

LOL XD!
I hope it definately saves some time. At first I totally felt like I was cheating and I totally felt guilty. But I was taking way too long to finish comic pages. For me personally I need to be able to do 5 pages a week. I can do about 2 pages a day now if I focus and don't get caught up in laying down the flat colors. Which is a whole different beast...
But yeah, LOL, the guilt faded fast.

Wow! I've heard of people using grey's and such but i didn't know how they did it. Thanks!

Yup yup! I've seen people use the grayshade method too. That's what prompted me to try this ^^. I chose purple because it's really neutral. Not too warm and too cold. I might have been doing it wrong but, gray wouldn't transition into another colors very easily with the color adjustments options for me :<. I trid blue too but then things ended up too cold looking XD;. I just remember in school they always said purple was neutral.

That makes sense. I've recently started expirmenting with colors and most places say to use purple for shadows anyway, but I never thought of them as neutral, but I guess they are.

I think I had the same problem myself where I end up wasting way too much time trying to shade and color, then end up getting frustrated. I think coming up with the purple shaders will help alot xD.

I have yet to learn how to, well, actually use photoshop, but this kind of makes sense (I'm pretty computer-illiterate).
I know a bit, because of other tutorials, but this actually did make sense to me. I was wondering about "day" and "night" colors, and how you'd get that look, but seeing this makes a lot more sense!

Nashya In reply to CaitlinMaryMargarett [2010-07-30 03:24:54 +0000 UTC]
XD I'm glad this helped!
Photoshop can take a bit of getting used to but once you find those shortcuts it's like "OOOH SNAP!" You're entire workflow changes. Definately take the time to try doing it by hand too. You'll be amazed how much you'll learn trying to figure it out. I wouldn't have found this method without wasting a million hours doing it by hand so defaintly play around ^^.
There's a few other ways to pull of the day to night trasition too but this is the easiest and you can see the results while you play with the colors :3.

I love you so much right now.
I am coloring a few pages for a client and the backgrounds are full of details, so the coloring was taking me ages specially when i had to build palletes for objects on different kind of lights X___x
