Simplified Version:
In this tutorial:
Okay, as promised, I have brought you my MASSIVE digital painting and GIMP tutorial. I have spent the last week putting together this monster for you guys.
I'm sorry its so big, I just had so much I wanted to say. And at the end of the day, you can choose what you read. It is basically just a overview of everything so you can read as little or as much as you want.
I have used my latest digital painting Rapunzel to demonstrate painting the facial features and background.
Additionally I have added a realistic imaginative example of painting features.
If you have any questions, pleaaasse comment, some of my wording may be a little vague or chatty, so I'm happy to clarify, or try to answer other questions.
Thanks so much, hope it helps.
Crystal/ Natalie.

yours are quite nice visually...

Hi again! I don't have anything specific! Just work on layers, cause I had to move things a lot! And a bit of humour never goes astray.

Awesome! Hopefully this can help me along! I've only been drawing for a few months, and I'm just now getting into purely digital drawings. I'm really itching to improve my art style, and knowing that high-quality drawings are possible with GIMP gives me a lot of hope! I'm also grateful for the explanations for all the tools, as I'm left with something to be desired when I look at the GIMP forums and the like. Thanks a bunch for making this!

Of course! Tools only aid the artist... the skills of an artist makes them versatile with working in many mediums!
GIMP is a great program! I only started using Photoshop for professional reasons in recent times!

Didn't actually anticipate a reply to this; thanks!
I made the investment and went with Manga Studio EX 4 and have been using that exclusively as of late. Been thinking about investing in SAI Paint or the newer version of Manga Studio/Clip Paint. I was going to keep using GIMP as well, but for some odd reason, it decided it didn't like my tablet. Worked fine before, but it was too much of a hassle to try troubleshoot.

I have had trouble with Gimp recently with my tablet. But I need to buy a new tablet as my current one is very old haha!
That's great news that you've found something that suits you! That's the right way to go.
Hope you continue to grow and learn lots!

Do you make a new layer every time you lower the brush opacity and go over the skin or hair again?
π: 0 β©: 1
nataliebeth In reply to TheSlyCatFace [2017-03-18 01:42:14 +0000 UTC]
Hello there! Thanks for your question, normally I just work on one layer because I'm wanting to blend colours that are already there. I tend to work on layer for skin, layer for highlights, layer for accessories/details that I might want to change. Layer for hair, layer for clothing. Layers for colour changes or filters.

This is an amazing tutorial!Β Thanks so very much for taking the time to make and post it for us digital painting aspirants!
Why doesn't Photoshop have a decent smudge tool? XPΒ I'm really considering using GIMP simply because it's a lot of time and effort in PS to use simple tools to blend colors and whatnot when GIMP seems to accommodate the artist waaay more (in more than one way, I'm learning!).

nataliebeth In reply to Gyrforce [2017-01-06 01:08:51 +0000 UTC]
OH MY GOSH YES!
The smudge tool is like their bane! If I'm ever using Photoshop, I'll go back to GIMP if I need to use the smudge feature lol! I'm glad someone else agrees!
Thanks so much for your comment.

I'm using another freeware program for line work, and realizing that GIMP is so much better for coloring / paint work. being a drawer by nature its taking a while to get the concept of building by color, not building by line.

Hey you, this is pretty amazing and also informative... You have similar working style and patterns like me, this is pretty much how my workflow goes
I see you were asking some people where did they found this deviation, well I stumbbled upon it on google search. I was searching "GIMP color blending" to try to find some useful tools or something and this came out.
It helped a lot of people and it's still helping, so I just wanted to put a comment here and also congratulate your work.
Yeah, added to watch
