Description
[EDIT] Alter the colours and added a little more depth, wasn't happy with the other one I put up :<---
I would advise for you to full view, and perhaps even download this one, there is a lot of detail that seems to go missing in the preview D:
"The others were on their way to join her, but I was the one she looked at, with an expression that seemed to say she was very sorry with how things had turned out."
Inspired by Memoirs of a Geisha (The book, not the film).
Took a couple of hours in photoshop..Not sure how long, wasn't really counting

Beautiful. My first thought was of Chiyo from Memoirs of a Geisha. It was a wonderful book, and you've done it justice.

You are so cute!!! XD The background took me ages in this picture D:!! The quickest thing to do was the fan, and I had to tone it down coz it ended up looking too realistic >_<;

Yay! Glad to hear someone got it without reading the description !
I need to finish reading the book, but I just had a major urge to draw something from it! It is soooo well written! I shall have to watch the film again once I have finished, I have only seen it once!
Thank you btw, glad you like it!

Oh, what a beautiful work ^^
you had a very nice doing making a very vivid cartoon style and you tell pretty well the story. The colours are pretty well the thecnique is well done and it's wonderful, you even make an aceptable perspective, something that seems hard to all the cartoon drawers (the opposite of me, I can draw spaces but it's very hard to me to make people properly xD)
But there is still thing that could be improved not to be good, but to go for a VelΓ‘zquez "I'm so cool that I don't even need to sign my work" level.
For example, one thing you could work is aerial perspective, you work it a little, but harder, the ting is that the far it's something the blury it gets. That thing helps you to tell stories in plains.
In this case..
First plan, you see the face and the water (cube in English?), the hurt of what happens. Details, you see every shadow of pain in her face, but you could see even the marks on her dirty clothes. Kind of recreation on the pain in the details. (by the way, nice detail on the water falling). You could even make her not seeing the viewer or the second shape. Just to be hidden for all, but you she how she feels. And it's where it has to be in one
Oh, I have to go, later I will continue the critic xD

Natashane In reply to Valerian32 [2008-09-30 22:03:42 +0000 UTC]
I don't really think and aerial perspective would be very good to show any emotions considering it would just be a view of their heads. As for story telling in this picture, I wanted everything in the BG to be out of focus, not just to create a sense of depth but also to show the focus of the story is on Chiyo, it was her thoughts we are being revealed to as well as her emotions. Which is why I chose this angle aswell, to focus all the attention onto her.
I was going to add the dirt on her clothing, though in the book she doesn't seem to be so dirty as the place she stays at likes to keep everything clean and well represented, and also in the story she had only began her chores so it wouldn't be accurate to have her dirty straight away.
Thank you for your critique though and I appreciate all your help!! Plus glad you like it ^^ though I think to be honest I really need to work on more action images all the stuff in my gallery seems to be very suttle moods!
Hope you are doing well btw ^^

Oh, yes, it can be, aerial perspective I mean more that bring an atmosphere that show something from a bird's view..
I'm trying to ^^

Mulan feeling? Probably coz they are both oriental? thanks btw

I think it's more the expression of defeat on the girl's face. The pity on the woman leaving's face reminds me of Mulan's mother.
