Katie stepped out of the bathroom. The hot shower to wash off the sweat felt good, followed by a cold one to get over the gorgeous guy she saw at the pool earlier. She glanced around her living room. She didn’t see her little sister anywhere. There was nowhere to hide in such a tiny room. Stephanie must be in the bedroom, she thought. Katie wandered that way, and froze. The sight before her totally stunned her. It took a moment before she figured out why she was looking at herself, and not in a mirror.

“All right, Stephanie,” Katie said. “Get out of my suit.”

“No!” Stephanie said. “I wanted to see it up close. I never see you in it, except when you dash by at one hundred miles an hour.”

“Two hundred sixty.”

“Whatevs.” Steph struck a pose. “How do I look?”

“Stupid! For one thing, I don’t smile when I’m out there, unless I just kicked ass. You have to look stern, in command. You know that face you make when you get a B in math? Try that. What am I doing? Why am I giving you superheroine lessons? Mom will kill me!”

“Think I can bust baddies like you?”

Katie groaned. “Come on, Steph. It isn’t a costume. It’s a uniform. When I wear it, people know I’m Valkyria, not just some blonde bimbo who can lift cars with one hand.”

“I can’t believe it fits me. You’re bigger than me in almost every department,” Steph said. She sighed. “I remember when you were my big sister who was smaller than me! It isn’t fair!”

“It’s made of spandex. It ex-spands to fit me. Spandex. Expands. Get it? Now, take it off.”

“Can I have one like it?”

“No,” Katie replied. She could only imagine what their mother would do, much less say, if Katie made Steph a superheroine costume. One dangerprone crimefighter in the family was enough. The only superpowers Steph had was the ability to comprehend calculus and attract boys. Those wouldn’t stop a gangster.

“I’ll take green,” Steph said. “You can keep the Electric Grape.”

“No.”

“Please?” Steph whined.

“No!”

“I’ll be your best friend!”

“You already are, brat. Okay, that’s it. My fingernails. Your ribs.”
