Description Valient Shield was an exercise held in August of 2007, bringing together three US carriers at once - USS NIMITZ, USS CARL VINSON, and USS KITTY HAWK.  The U.S. Air Force also participated.  I was with the staff of Carrier Strike Group 11 during the exercise, embarked on the NIMITZ.  I took a number of pictures like this one the last day of the exercise, which was a no fly day.  The last day usually includes getting the ships together for a lot of photos, which means we steam much closer to each other than normal.  This picture shows an F/A-18F Superhornet with VFA-41 (Black Aces), with USS COWPENS (CG 63) and USS CARL VINSON (CVN 74) steaming alongside.

That Hornet is really dulled out. You can barely make out where it says NAVY between the wings on the fuselage. You took some nice pics, Nav.

Yep - even the relatively new birds got pretty dirty on cruise!

Interesting name indeed - she is name after a Revolutionary War battle - the Battle of Cowpens, which took place in South Carolina.  Ticonderoga class cruisers are all named after famous battles fought by the U.S. from the Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War.

Thanks for that; remember that us British use different names for "Revolutionary War" battles from you "damned colonials".

I think we still have at least 20 active carriers.

We actually have 11, including the newest carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) just commissioned in July this year.
