Description
Naval aircraft get pretty dirty at Sea. Closeup of the nose of an F/A-18A+ of VMFA 232 Red Devils shows that. Can't really keep up with it, but the crews do all they can to prevent the sea and salty air from eating away at the aircraft. Paint touch-ups are the norm - no need for a smooth, consistent paint finish! This pic was shot at dusk onboard USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) while at anchor in Hong Kong in April 2008.

Thanks - it was really amazing how grimy aircraft get when they operate from an aircraft carrier. You can't keep them as clean as Air Force birds since battling salt corrosion effects from the sea and air is a full time effort!

our Big Boeings can get pretty nasty after Summer Schedule too...both planes and crews need to go in for a nice Heavy Check/Overhaul after it,s over...!

Keeping them clean at sea is sort of a zero sum game - just gotta keep the nasty effects of sea and salty air at bay!

Sure do! I hope to decide by the end of this year, because the subjects I take next year -well and this year really, determine what things I can get into study at Uni

Sometimes the simplest, even most casual decisions have a huge impact. The only reason I'm actually in the Navy is because when I started college, I was attending a university in my hometown. I wanted to move away from home, but couldn't really afford to go to a new college out of town. I decided to try for an ROTC scholarship to see if that would work, and picked the Navy because I didn't want to get shot at! The scholarship came through and I left my hometown as a junior in college. Many years later, I'm still with the Navy. A rather routine decision had a pretty big impact in my life!
Whatever you choose to do - do it beause it is for you. Welcome advice of friends and family, but act for you!

Wow, yeah, I don't come from an overly rich family so I'm told I can't attend uni, instead guided towards a polytec. A scholarship would be great, I'm going to need them if I can even hope of raising the money for the overseas schooling.
My brother wants to join the army because they pay for all your training, its a smart choice really, and the navy does that here aswell.
Thanks for the advice

They were among the oldest planes in the airwing. The A version of the F/A-18 was the first one. The squadron had turned in their "C" aircraft because these A versions had fewer carrier landings than the C birds!

Mostly salt - in the air and sea. Dirt comes from everywhere as well!
