The 1st Mate of the Cross Guild, former Warlord, and dubbed the "Strongest Swordsman"- Dracule Mihawk was born of reasonable nobles from the land of Muggy Kingdom but the island was attacked by the World Government years ago. He was saved by Roronoa Aoro the 39th and made into a squire for his kingdom in Vira. Mihawk became famous even before the start of the Great Age of Pirates 24 years ago. Going by his original epithet, "Marine Hunter", Mihawk had defeated several Marines in his past as a wanted pirate- due to fighting on Aoro's command to liberate the World from the World Nobles. He challenged increasingly powerful opponents until no one could challenge him outside of a select few, thus earning the title of "World's Strongest Swordsman"- something he felt belonged to his master. He was a rival to Shanks due to the latter being an apprentice to Aoro's enemy and felt cheated when Shanks lost an arm and thus became weaker in his eyes.

He would serve until an infamous incident caused the kingdom to be ruled by Midas of the World Noble and Mihawk begrudgingly has to become a Warlord to protect his mentor's kingdom and to add insult to injury, become a member of Byakuo's KATANA- Byakuo being a spiteful rival that proceeded to have the Name-Name Fruit user at the time change Aoro's name to make him a degraded creature out of pettiness- and be dubbed the "Strongest Swordsman" as a propaganda tool. Mihawk while an exceptional swordsman, knows he doesn't live up to his master's legacy and that of the swordsmen of the OLD WORLD. He has a jaded existence, being a Warlord to prevent the W.G from ruining the country while keeping up the lie he joined out of a need to not be annoyed by Marines until he unexpectedly finds Zoro, unbeknownst to him at the time, a surviving son of his mentor, taken by Dragon to Wano and then to the East Blue for his protection. He finds promise in the young man as a rival and when Zoro asks him to train him, he is impressed and eventually makes the connection between Zoro and Aoro- teaching everything he knows. When the Warlord system is abolished, he takes advantage of Cross Guild and Crocodile/Buggy's influences in order to launch an attack on Vira occupied by Midas, the tyrannical usurper, but Imu foresees the assault and utilizes Nero's Brand-Brand power to force any former Warlords with the secret Hoof of the Dragon to fight on the side of Vira. Zoro and Mihawk have an intense battle that sees Zoro as the victor and Mihawk in his dying words proceeds to explain his actions and relinquish his sword to Zoro. Buggy respected him post-training and takes it upon himself to have Rora be Mihawk's replacement as she has a desire for freedom and she was one of Mihawk's students prior to the Vira incident.

He is very serious, almost never smiling or revealing his emotions unless extremely rare circumstances take place. As an infamous pirate, he is not someone ambitious or cruel and his only goal in life is to be outmatched by another swordsman- with it being implied for this person has to be a Roronoa heir in order to atone for working for his mentor's enemies and to pass down his skills out of obligation. He displays a sense of honor as he recognizes and respects the swordsman's code. He takes pride in his swordsmanship, believing that a nick on his sword is a blemish to his pride. Deep down, he's very jaded that the majority of his success while having exceptional skills, is based on propaganda of being the W.G's puppet- being his mentor's enemies' pawn. Though he is confident in his strength, Mihawk remains grounded. While he has become jaded regarding the abilities of other swordsmen, due to facing numerous weaker opponents, he is able to recognize talent. Despite having grown bored with being challenged by inferior foes, Mihawk showed excitement at being chased as a pirate once more due to the dissolution of the Warlord system- mostly due to not having to follow the W.G at the time. Although Mihawk is normally passive when dealing with others, he can come off as rather blunt and cold at times- something he's always been since being young, with Aoro and the other Knights of Vira loyal to Aoro taking advantage of his blunt nature to fluster him via teasing. In spite of his apathetic behavior, Mihawk is capable of showing care and compassion to others- notably his mentor and to a lesser extent, Zoro and Perona. Mihawk also shows curiosity for the people he decides to attack, thus is very analytical about others' abilities and can recognize strengths that others may not.

He has Advanced Observation Haki- able to instantly see the potential of others/sense the locations of targets/sense emotions- even hidden ones/see the future to an indefinite level/sense intent/see alternative futures, Advanced Armament Haki that can generate a Regalia that boosts his powers as well as emit ranged Haki slashes, and Advanced Conquerors Haki to generate either an internal rupture attack or create a Dream pocket dimension composed of swords that he uses to attack others. He also has Wind/Lightning Nature Haki, limited Sorcery Haki due to being instructed by his mentor on the Poneglyphs, and Injustice Haki. When made to serve the World Nobles again via the Mark-Mark Fruit, he was force-fed a Base-Base Fruit to enhance his strength under the assumption that Zoro would be stronger than them in their eventual encounter.

However, his most potent and most notable skill is his swordsmanship, with him being able to utilize an incomplete variation of the Roronoa All Slice technique which can cut even concepts- with his variation being able to bypass invulnerable defenses and dimensions- causing dimensional rifts. He admits that as a Human, he cannot get full access to the power as the Roronoa are Ashura descendants- hence their Ashura form manifestations that take full advantage of the power to cut through concepts, genetics to remove Daemon Edible Plant powers, negate regeneration, attack the soul to destroy it, slice through illusions, cut through destiny, intangible beings, space-time, and death itself to save a comrade.
