This is a really beautiful and simple piece of art. It's gorgeous and brutal in its shocking nature.Β
AN dit does justice to one of my favorite villains

Yes, I wanted to illustrate the dark, ominous and cold monochrome exterior Doom presents himself with- how it hides the light, chaotic and deranged colorful true nature. That Doom was scary not because he was openly crazy, but he seemed to be a ruthless voice of extreme order only to be revealed to be a complete, murderous lunatic with ever-changing features. The yellows and reds really make the contrast of the dark grays and blacks all the more visually striking.
I don't think studios will ever allow a villain like Doom to be pitched for a wide screen audience ever again. The 80s and early 90s animated films were dark!

On the surface he's kind of an over the top character. But he's never truly a mustache twirler and in whatever form he takes he's always a threat.Β
i think for me the most threatening part about this guy was that he had self control. He could reign in his inner toon nature in order to fulfill his evil goals.Β
Your art is highly simple and is evocative of old school movie posters. Just by looking at it, I can readily and easily see who you're talking about and how their inner universe works.Β
Lastly the movie Roger Rabbit was a labour of love, you don't see many of those in the modern hyper corporate landscape

Self-control is probably a better word than just being stoic, otherwise he wouldn't make bombastic speeches about freeways if he were low-key on his emotions. He likes control and anything that disrupts that control, like the Toon Patrol goofing off/being incompetent or Roger taking control away from him- are the only things outside of being literally flattened that make him loose that control. Doom then proceeds to loose all self-control and become nightmarishly deranged. Being openly scary is creepy, but being actually insane under the guise of logical sanity is terrifying.Β
I didn't realize I was doing that with that design in mind. I just wanted a color scheme contrast between black/white logic and colorful madness.Β
If they did Roger Rabbit now, they would have some internal logic excuse for why Jessica would have a drastic characterization and design change to be better acceptable to modern audiences like how cartoons evolve over time subtly or overtly. Mainly because people apparently don't like she's too sexy for modern audiences for being a provocative symbol from the times, with a more peppy, child friendly characterization being more acceptable. Maybe even being a plot point.Β
