nejinoki — Starfox Assault or not

Description When I first heard of how "Starfox Assault" was going to feature missions on foot, I immediately envisioned an epic, gritty, warfare simulator starring the Starfox bunch, even though I had my doubts. As much ridicule the recent trend with the "bloom" visual effect has received, it would have been nice to have here.

When I actually got my hands on the game, my fears were proven true.
Except for the rare gems, Japanese developers generally blow at shooting games on foot (both 1st and 3rd person), and this game was no exception. Also, the flight missions started off awesome and went quickly kind of downhill from there.
I also wan't a big fan of the retro-future look of everything as well.

Hence I draw pics like this, play games like CoD4, and cry myself to sleep.

Your views on the final outcome of "Starfox assault" are vary similar too mine, all be it I was expecting a game that shared more in common with the classic Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 installments I agree that I was disappointed.

Heh, has squeaky-clean Nintendo ever made anything even remotely grim'n'gritty, let alone within a franchise full of fuzzy forest folk? I'm reminded of the 'sweat' in the SNES edition of Mortal Kombat. I'm afraid that you were on a hiding to nowhere hoping for chaos and carnage!

Maybe there's potential in Sega. Sega and Nintendo have a closer relationship than they did with good old days of the Nineties, so maybe that's a potential outlet - Sega's struck on the cunning policy of offering up traditional fare like Madworld to the game-starved fans while Nintendo contents itself with Wii Fit and minigame shovelware. Then again, having a couple of characters appear in a crossover is a bit different from handing over an entire franchise to a rival, so "Metal Gear Starfox" might remain only a twinkle in our eye for the forseeable future, I'm afraid.

Not familiar with the Mortal Kombat thing .... my gaming life started with the 64, but I can well imagine Nintendo doing that.

I didn't expect Nintendo to venture outside the colorful and cheerful themselves (though they did step in that direction a bit with Twilight Princess), which was why I was so excited when they said Namco's Ace Combat dev team was doing the development. (It later got passed to the Klonoa team and we got what we have now) I think Nintendo, Sega, and Namco were in the "Triforce" deal to cooperate to develop games that were arcade-compatible, so I do think they are in a close relationship, but my hopes are diminishing for any gritty style first-party franchise games as only the happy titles keep on rolling out.

And I just saw the Madhouse trailer. It was ... quite different from the usual fare

Just for a quick overview on the Mortal Kombat issue:

Essentially, Sega released an unadulterated and unexpurgated version of the game full of the blood'n'guts that we adore, whereas Nintendo beat about the bush and fretted for a while before eventually proferring a half-hearted and anaemic edition with no Fatalities and the red blood clumsily recoloured to be grey 'sweat'.

Now, Mortal Kombat isn't a terribly sophisticated beat-'em-up so the blood is really the main hook to the game. Boys are made from slugs, snails, and puppy-dogs' tails, so naturally we all flocked to the gloriously gruesome Mega Drive version while Nintendo humiliated itself for its prudery and became the laughing stock of the industry for a time.

Nintendo got its own back a couple of years later, though. During the Night Trap controversy the president of Nintendo of America spoke at a Congressional inquiry and, playing it for all he was worth, made Nintendo out to be paragons of saintly virtue and all but condemned Sega of advocating rape, baby-killing and communism - which of course Joe Lieberman lapped right up.

That would be tight, Fox and Snake in a shoot out, or you could have Fox and Snake VS Wolf and Liquid.

Wow...that is gritty and scary. Though how would that fit in with the uni. I'd think Fox would be using more futuristis weaponry against their enemies. Though you could arguably make those 'gritty' too.

My main complaint with Assault is that it's too short XD I actually didnt mind the controls that much, mostly becus I rarely play shooting games anyway. Altho, it does take a little getting used to..

Anyway, awesome pic!

nejinoki In reply to OsHoshi [2009-03-16 03:22:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
The length it takes to go through it once isn't all that different from Starfox 64, but 64 had a lot of routes, so more play value, I guess.
I didn't consider myself particularly a shooter-game person, but thinking back that was one of the most played genres of games I played.

OsHoshi In reply to nejinoki [2009-04-07 06:55:24 +0000 UTC]

exactly! I was totally expecting to find a way in Assault so that it would say "Mission Accomplished" but no~~~~~ D+

Haha, that's why, for me, my love to the StarFox franchise will always be thanks to 64!

Namco and Rare really killed it for me. I mean, the magical dinosaurs... and the floating heads... seriously -_-

This vibe you've captured here- this is what Starfox always should have been. Here's hoping the next game gets first-party development

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nejinoki In reply to Spectrum-VII [2009-03-09 20:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Good, at least someone agrees with me...
In explaining to my friends how I found Adventures to be wrong, I used the "Master Chief with a magical wand" analogy a lot

I wouldn't mind if it gets second-party development ... as long as they do it right. I still wonder what it would have been like if Namco kept the Ace Combat team on Starfox Assault...

The stark ink strokes on this one are really potent! It'd be wicked to see StarFox try on missions this hardcore.

Thanks! MGS is always to blame, but Street Fighter IV just joined the list on things that make me draw like this

This is very interesting work--- The effect of the gun, and the look of concentration on Fox's face is impressive.

With Assault, I rather enjoyed the arwing missions more than the on foot ones.. something about the controls of that were tough to master

nejinoki In reply to TheGreatMatsutzu [2009-03-03 18:33:24 +0000 UTC]

I may have overdid the muzzle-flash, but better to overdo than underdo is my motto of late

Also in Assault, for me, the biggest "wow" moment for me was the intro to the first mission. It was absolutely stunning and epic ... and then kind of devolved into mediocre or psychedelic after that

Geez. I know what you mean. *Pictures Star Fox + Gears of War* Now THAT would be awesome!
I like the gritty feeling about this one, the sketchiness really adds to it. Definitely reminds me of CoD4. :3

My first excitement came when I first heard that new Starfox (after Adventures) for Gamecume was going to be developed by the Ace Combat team from Namco. THAT got me excited.
Then news kind of stopped coming, and after much silence, I find out that the development has been moved to the Klonoa team, and ended up being a "meh" game...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hellknight1000 In reply to nejinoki [2009-03-03 18:30:16 +0000 UTC]

Lol Wow what the hell happened? Yeah it was definitely a meh game, but not too bad. Better luck on the Wii I suppose.

nejinoki In reply to Hellknight1000 [2009-03-03 18:39:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it wasn't too bad. I guess I overhyped it for myself ...

For the Wii, I just hope they don't come up with some gimmick like "fly the Arwing like a paper airplane with the Wiimote!" That would ruin my day
