Description Patreon voted illustration for the month of December~

The second pinup from December's Patreon support, Pom from Them's Figthin' Herds. Thought I'd draw Pom calm for once, she's usually shown stressed or freaked out.

I hope it does well. It might have some difficulty in finding an audience now: a fighting game comes with a steep learning curve, and with such cute characters many would probably think this is a kids' game. On top of that, being a brony has fallen waaaay out of vogue, with the fandom having shrunk pretty considerably over the years. The deck is stacked pretty heavily against Fightin' Herds. :/

I think this game has a pretty good chance of being successful. This is not a MLP game and no longer has any association with the MLP franchise, so you don't need to be a Brony to like it. I also think it could very well become a strong rival for MLP and the thing that many ex-Bronies use to fill the hole that was left by leaving that fandom; I mean that's what it is for me.

Having no association with MLP is a big risk, my dude. A lot of terrible things started out as fanfiction, like Fifty Shades of Grey.

I don't think something like this could possibly rival MLP in terms of marketshare or even quality. My point still stands that the complex nature of a fighting game does not lend well to cutesy, animal characters whose designs seem more like they're still trying to appeal to young girls. It's like gasoline in your milk: both are useful by themselves, but you'd never really them together.

On another note, why'd you leave the fandom? There's been a real exodus lately, and I'm curious.

Well I personally think that it had a huge weight lifted off it when it separated itself with MLP and became its own thing, since non-Bronies (as in people who were never fans of the show) don't usually like touch anything that has the MLP name on it just because they don't like the fandom that's attached to it or they think it's simply for little girls. So with TFH being its own property now, it won't have any stigma attached it, thus allowing more people to give it a chance. And unlike "Fifty Shades of Grey", TFH actually looks promising and has more of a chance of being good (which is ultimately subjective, but whatever) since it had the original developer of MLP:FIM (Lauren Faust) had a hand in its creation and the game developers seem to actually know what they're doing.

From what I have seen, I think it works. The characters, the backgrounds, the gameplay, the story/lore, the music, all of it comes together in my opinion. And I think the fact that it is one of the few fighting game that has a slightly more cutesy and colorful aesthetic and the fact that it features four-legged animal characters instead of humanoid characters, will work in its favor in attracting new players since it is different and unique from many other fighting game. Also you have to keep in mind that the six ungulate characters that are on the main roster won't be the only things you will fight in the game, you will also have the NPC enemies, the Predators, which are these dark creatures which are more scary and darker than the main characters, so it isn't all saccharine. But this is all just my opinion and you are free to disagree.

I just lost interest in the show, like I felt that the later seasons weren't very good (which is somewhat of an unpopular opinion), so I just stopped watching it. And I figured that if I'm no longer watching the show and no longer has passion for it I once had, why stay a part of the fandom? So I decide to jump ship, but not without tying a few loose ends.

For the record, I respect the team for making the game even after the setback of Hasbro's lawyers canning the whole project. The stuff these guys have had to do to get this thing finished are amazing, and they're all obviously talented game designers and artists and programmers.

But the thing is... from a business perspective, this game simply doesn't look like it's going to do well. Fighting games in general haven't sold that well in many years, with even big releases not staying in top sales spots for very long. If they'd taken a less Street Fighter route and a more player-friendly Super Smash Bros approach, it'd benefit the kid-friendly designs of the characters better. From a marketing perspective, a more approachable game that doesn't involve too much investment would end up selling better.

And your opinion is hardly unpopular. Many ex-bronies, myself included, started hating the series after a certain episode -- and which episode it is differs from person to person.

Well I think that is the route that they are taking with it, and I think there is a good chance that it could work with not just kids, but adults and teens as well; especially since a lot of teens and adults love games like Super Smash Bros (though that could be due to just nostalgia). And I think that this game has just a good amount of investment to where it could sell good on Steam, many people might buy and play it because of the concept of cute animals fighting each other. Of course, there is no guarantee that TFH will be a smash hit (which is why I emphasized 'could'), it could very well fail and I could be wrong and overly optimistic about its chances on the market, but we'll just have to wait until it comes out in February to see if it does well or not.

The reason I say it's unpopular opinion is because I've seen a lot of Bronies on YouTube write off ex-Bronies or current Bronies' criticisms of the newer seasons as hate and will say that the newer seasons and episodes are good and the detractors don't like them because they're different and not like the older seasons. For me, that wasn't really the case because I wanted the show to go in a new and different direction from the older seasons. It's just that the direction the writers and animators did go in, was way too safe, boring and bit stagnant IMO. The newer seasons also did things that I personally was not very fond of, like making Starlight Glimmer a good guy and turning her into an overly-apologetic character who is really irresponsible and stupid or reforming all the Changelings and having them turn all colorful and cute, or making Rainbow Dash's parents really dorky and embarrassing. So I never understood why Bronies who defend the newer seasons would say that against ex-Bronies or jaded Bronies.

I also stopped watching the show after a certain episode. I was just watching the show sporadicly until I had seen the episode "Fame and Misfortune", then I pretty much gave on the series. I understood the message and satire of it, I just thought it wasn't handled very well and just very frustrating to sit through especially because of the character's stupid actions. Which episode made you want to leave, if you don't mind me asking?
