The idea was to give the place a sense of desolation, but nothing extreme like nuclear postapocalypse (therefore no, it's not Fo:E related, I am sorry).
I probably overdid it a bit with setting the mood too dark. Or not?

This landscape is breathtaking to say the least! The setting is so well done and makes you think you're really in a despairing world where you won't find anyone for miles.

After many years, freinds of Twilight got older... without her, and finaly died of old age. Twilight was ravaged by sadness and lock her with Celestia and Luna in canterlot castle, and abandoned Equestria. Cadance lost Shinnig Armor as the same and joined them at Canterlot and let Flurryheart lead the cristal empire. Year after year, pony left step by step ponycity and canterlot, abandoned by princesses. The new generation tried to spill friendship across equestria but without the back up of the princess, thier work would be vain. Discord would be loyal and stay with her until the end and sometimes, cry on the tombs of the mane six. I think it's the end that inspire me.

It kind of makes me think that all the ponies moved or relocated somewhere else, leaving the town to desolated as it slowly crumbled with no one to care for it
