Description
This is pretty self explanatory, but since I've never actually made a tutorial before, I'm worried I may have overlooked certain things or perhaps I haven't explain it clear enough. If you have any questions, you're welcomed to ask and I'll do my best to help! This is just the basic shape, but I'll make another one as soon as I sew on a collar and make the pockets.
Tip - You can always look at your own jackets or shirts to see how the sleeve connects with the shoulder, I did that too, but make sure you sew them in the order I suggested, because it's easier.
Don't panic if it doesn't look good at first, try again! It may look easy in the tutorial, but it's actually a pain in the ass. Believe me, though, it's worth it. <3
Download it for better quality and to be able to read the smaller text!

When I sew on the sleeves, should the front of the jacket be spread apart or should the two front pieces be touching? Β
π: 0 β©: 1
neptunyan In reply to KorraBlack [2015-05-12 23:21:11 +0000 UTC]
The front of the jacket? You mean the chest pieces? I'm not sure I understand your question,
but if you mean whether they should be touching AFTER you sew on the sleeves, for this kind
of jacket it doesn't really matter, because the jacket needs to stay open anyway. For other types
of jackets (with zippers, buttons, etc), they should reach each other so you can zip or button up
the jacket.
If you meant whether they should be touching when you sew the sleeves, it doesn't really matter,
you just need to pay attention to the shoulders, the armpit (the ends need to meet there to cover
the hole your arm goes through), then you sew down the side.
I hope this helped, I'm not too great at explaining.

Thank you so much! My jacket turned out perfectly! I didn't manage to embroider the patch on the back in time, but everything else was finished and it looks great!Β

What kind of fabric are you using...? I'd like to know since this is the first cosplay I'll ever make...
π: 0 β©: 1
neptunyan In reply to Heaven-Eather [2014-08-10 18:45:50 +0000 UTC]
The fabric is called ' syntethic leather ' , there are many types of it, but I recommend you should search for a softer, more flexible one so it would be comfortable to wear. Good luck!

Hey, don't worry. I'm anxious and nervous all the time too, everyone is, I'm sure. And even if you fail, it's alright, just keep practicing until you get it right. Failure is a process of learning itself, so don't worry about it. You'll get there!

By hand, I don't have a sewing machine and never worked with one, unfortunately. But if you sew double hems and you pay attention, you can make a strong jacket that won't rip easily, even if sewn by hand.

when making the main jacket part of it what should I measure?
π: 0 β©: 1
neptunyan In reply to vocaloidgumilover [2014-07-27 13:22:41 +0000 UTC]
Your arms length, your shoulders, your waist ( optionally, because it doesn't have to fit you ), your neckline, etc. Make them a cm or two longer though, so you can sew a hem, and in case they're too long, you can trim them to your liking.

Oh wow, nice character.
Well, you can look at my AoT Jacket Tutorial - details. I show how to sew a collar there, but instead of folding it downwards, you can just leave it sticking up, then sew two little belts at the middle of it to keep it closed around your neck. All collars should normally stick up if we didn't fold them, so you can push up / unfold a collar from a dress shirt to see how it'll look, for better guidance.
If you can't figure it out, I could try to draw a sketch for you. Good luck!

I recommend a darker shade of beige, somewhat like the color of the sand.

Thanks so much for this! It's going to save my ass for all of this. But I searched for the imitation leather and all I can find is upholstery... where can i find the right fabric? (preferably a store since I'm making the entire cosplay in a week...)
Thanks!

neptunyan In reply to fallen-rebel-angel66 [2014-03-14 20:23:07 +0000 UTC]
You are very much welcomed!
You can go to a store which sells only fabrics ( preferably a larger one, because they have a wider variety there ), and either ask for leather imitation or artificial leather / synthetic leather for jackets. It has to be just a little bit thick, sometimes a little elastic and soft. The underside usually has a different fabric, a dark, softer one, and the one above is just like leather.
It can be a bit pricey, though, but it's worth it because it's easy to work with and it seems strong, your jacket will last longer and it'll look better.
Google a fabric store in your area, or ask a local seamstress for help. Explain what you want to do with the fabric, and I'm sure they'll give you the right one! It's usually the type of fabric most 'leather' jackets are made of, not the real leather jackets, but the artificial ones.
Good luck!

ah okay, i've just been entirely stumped on making the pink dress that Mistuki Koyama wears in Full Moon wo sagashite if you know the anime/manga. though mainly with the sleeves and this turtorial actually helped me with that in the fact that i didnt think about the fact that you can't sew the sides before the sleeves
So thank you

Ah, I know the character, but I'm not sure which dress you're referring to. Maybe I will try to make a tutorial for that in the future, I loved FullMoon! Good luck with your dress!
