Description And possibly last 2012 deviation too. Ridge once again helped with these, well mainly the Banzai Bill and Dry Bowser. Go check out his stuff if you haven't already!

So, I updated. Here are some sprites, for the most part finished ones. Look, it's Sonic! Dry Bowser has the standing still front, back and side sprites finished. Some more NSMB2 gold things in the form of a pipe and a brick block. Raccoon Mario too. Vastly improved, brand-new Handfake signs. A yellow Luma and Polari from Mario Galaxy. Princess Peach and Toad are rather old actually, just gave them some minor tweaks recently to make them look better.

The bottom-left corner Mario Bros sprites were made for laughs and since there was some empty space, might as well put them on there. The Luigi is the infamous "cross-eyed Luigi" from the SMW cartoon while the Mario is based on an old drawing of mine from 2009: neslug.deviantart.com/art/Mari…

can you learn me how to make BiS sprites?

I see you've already asked Ridge. Really the only advice I can give is to intensively study the official BIS sprites and all the small nuances they have. Many people I've seen only really pay attention to the outer gray anti-aliasing, but there's much more to it than that.

Example picture of anti-aliasing is on the right side here: [link]
Looks smoother than the left one doesn't it?

The insides around the black outline are often also anti-aliased with a darker shade unless the base colour is already very dark. For example, a yellow object or character would be AA'd with brown on the inside, as you can see on the Koopas or my Luma up there. Things like Chain Chomps are very dark blue/black and therefore may not need the inner AA, unless you specifically want to still add it like I often do because I'm not working with any palette limitations. While it's a good idea to try to stick with the official palette, if there's some colour you need for your sprite that doesn't exist in any of the official ones, don't hesitate to create it.

Some special effects, like water and fire, typically do not have outlines at all, while ice and snow have non-black outlines as seen here . Finally, avoid using pure black inside the outlines of a sprite, black should only be used for eyes and mouths. Some very large sprites consisting of several smaller sprites, such as Bowser inside battle , can use black inside of the outline.

It can take a while to get good at BIS. Practise a lot and use the official sprites as style reference.

The reason they remind you of the Mario and Luigi games is because I intentionally tried to copy the style. I learned mostly by carefully looking at sprites, and doing some spriting of my own for roughly six years. When I first tried making sprites in this style, they were awful, so some practice is definitely needed to do these things.

One day I will show you one of my sprites!!
For the time, there are awful and not Fawful!!! ^^
You're my example and master, I am going to walk on your footstep!!! ;D

Awesome work! After not seeing Dry Bowser for a few weeks, I can say he looks really very nice. (Still think he needs more hair on the side pose, though...)
Dry Bowser, Peepa, Mega Mushroom and Handfakes are my favorites - I love the new signs you made for the latter.

If I had to give criticism on something, Blooper's shape looks off to me, mostly the bottom four tentacles and the head fins. Toad's head is also kind of square on the sides and something about his face bothers me.

Wario in disguise. That cross eyed Luigi is better than the original one from the SMW cartoon.

I just think that Peach's face looks a bit too unshaded, when compared to other things in this image.

Well, no, since that would involve Bowser falling into lava, which would kill everybody inside him.

Very nice indeed! I love the various characters here, I may not be as familiar with Mario as I am other Nintendo series but these are all beautifully detailed. I especially like Dry Bowser and Peach, although they're all fantastic. It's fantastic to see some more of your artwork again, I really do miss your updates although I understand you're often busy.

Oh wow, and how the hell was cross-eyed Luigi the last thing I noticed?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Neslug In reply to SacredDragon [2012-12-03 18:28:06 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Dry Bowser easily took the longest so I would hope it would look at least decent. Peach was relatively easy to make, but now that I look at her again, her face may need to be updated again.

The Luigi looks fairly normal from afar, that could be why. Then you notice the eyes (or possibly the switched overall and shirt colours).
