When Silver regained consciousness, Shadow and Omega were gone.

He slowly climbed to his feet, holding his head. He'd grown chilled from lying on the sidewalk. Even in summer, Sapphire City was cool and moist at night, due to the ocean air.

What had Shadow said? He'd hurt Silver in Soleanna? Maybe that was why Silver had lost his memory. Brain trauma.

As the white hedgehog stood there, hurting, disappointed and empty, a motorcycle's roar echoed off the buildings. After a moment it cruised into sight, a graceful swoop of chrome and leather. A white bat gripped the handlebars.

To Silver's surprise, she pulled her bike to the curb beside him and cut the engine. She pulled off a pink helmet and shot him a smile. "Hello, Silver. Shadow said you were around."

Silver backed away a step. Shadow hadn't killed him, so he sent Rouge to finish the job? Did Rouge kill people? Mighty hadn't mentioned it...

But Rouge laughed. "Don't look so frightened! Hop on the back, here. I'll give you a ride back to civilization."

A moment later, Silver was astonished to find himself riding behind Rouge with a powerful engine roaring beneath him. The motorcycle made short work of the city streets, and soon they pulled into a parking lot outside Station Square.

Rouge killed the engine. "What's a nice kid like you doing in a place like this?"

Silver jumped off the bike and faced her. "I'm trying to find out what happened in Soleanna."

Rouge shrugged. "I don't know what happened to you. I was following a lead about Dr. Robotnik that turned up nothing. Pretty place, Soleanna. What happened to you?"

"I don't remember. That's why I'm trying to find out."

The bat shrugged one wing. "Talk to Sonic. He was all over that city."

Silver drew a deep breath and questioned the paradox. "How do you know me, then?"

Rouge opened her mouth, then closed it with a frown. "That's funny. I don't remember." She gazed at Silver a long moment. "Maybe I should find out, myself. Good luck!"

She fired up her engine and roared away into the night, leaving Silver with still more questions.
