nice! i found this one at a store that sells random items that are damaged or expired, or fell off the truck or something so it was a killer deal.

Deserves to be a classic! The last time I saw anything remotely like it the picture was a Science Fiction book cover project done by a friend of mine in 1973!

Let me guess: Murray Tinkleman for John Brunner's "The Sheep Look Up." That was the first thing I was reminded of when I saw it.

neurophonix has already done the ideal cover for that. This was something done for a photographic training course, I think. It never got used for the book, which was one of Frederick Pohl's.

Yes, if Brunner ever undergoes a rediscovery, I can't think of a better pic for it than this.

The Sheep Look Up and Shockwave Rider are due for rediscovery in particular, because they are SO apposite right now. And this stuff was written 50 years ago!

Don't forget Stand on Zanzibar, the most prescient of all his novels, which more closely resembles the world we live in with each new day. That was written in 1968.

While that one is considered part of the future warning quartet, I always felt that the time travel aspect of it removed a huge chunk of verisimilitude from the story and made it seem less contemporary than the others, whose dire warnings were far more pressing to the here and now.

The title seems like such an easy request, to breath, and the photo is of a gas mask...Am I to take it that I need the mask to breath, after looming pollution has corroded our air? With such a simple photo, such a mental image is painted, of a post-apocalyptic world...

I'm glad you can draw all that from this! I suffer from severe asthma which i've had all my life so i find i relate well to symbols like this gas mask which are breathing aids.

Interesting...ten I can see how the world might look like such an ominous and unforgiving place to you. BTW I love your avatar, like a menacing grin chewing through the skin of DA itself.

I do wish I had a gas mask. Then I could bug-bomb my house and watch the small, developing insect nations fall beneath my oppressive iron fist.

do you mean the mask, or the image?

neurophonix In reply to Pepper-sh [2009-12-08 04:18:11 +0000 UTC]
heh well due to other requests i've made prints available here so if you're wanting it on a coffee mug or on your wall you could try that, although i've never tried a DA print so i can't tell you how good or bad they do. if you're not familiar with their results i would suggest ordering a cheaper smaller one first as a proof of sorts. as for the mask i believe it's an "Israeli civilian gas mask" which i think you can find in abundance online in stores like amazon and ebay, and probably numerous other places. hope this helps!
