Description
Here we go - the first submission and a teaser shot of things to come from my weekend away at Donna Nook.Shot Details
I worked hard to get this. What you see here is a virtually unprocessed, straight from camera shot from yesterday morning at Donna Nook.
Nikon D200 + Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 + Lee ND0.9 Hard Grad + Manually fired flash.
Taken in a Single shot. I'm dead chuffed.
---------------------------
I have spent the last 5 hours carefully selecting keepsie shots and have kept the number down to... 100!
They will all be up on my website in due time, and a few will obviously make it up here but you'll have to be patient.
Stay tuned or check my website in the next few days for more seal works including
Wide Angle Shots
Portrait Shots
Action Shots
Enjoy!

I have to leave another comment. After looking your entire gallery twice I would say this one is one of my favorite shots. The warm colors, the seal. It is just full of life.

Yes I did.
I had time yesterday so I looked at all of your photos. I did that because I really admire your work and the beauty of the scenes you took. And your photos can be looked at for a long time without loosing interest.
I will be definitely watching your work from now on. And you are the first photographer here on DA who's work I watch. (I watch everything jewelry and metal work related since that is my greatest passion.)So you can take this as a big compliment.
And I like to compliment people who's work I like. People with talent really deserve to hear that their work is beautiful.

nope. These are wild seals that come to breed on the east coast of england at a place called donna nook. Its a huge beach there the tide comes up by over a mile (its a long hike out to the main colony).
The seals arrive around novemeber to have their pups and they leave again during december and are all gone by mid january

omg it must be amazing.. but there are some kind of security for the seals? They could be killed by fishers...

the beach is owned by the Royal Air Force and leased out to the local trust as its a nature reserve. The beach is not accessible during the weekdays as it is used for bombing runs, but the RAF don't do those when the seals are around.
A warden is stationed there to take care of any sick seals and a small part of the dunes are roped off to provide a sort of sanctuary. no fishing would ever take place here anyway because the sea is so far out from the main land (mile walk out across mud flats. The tide does come all the way up but only very shallow.
Apart from that theres nothing in place to protect them from anything. Their totally wild and a few pups do die due to ignorance of some wanker photographers who get too close to a pup and get their scent on it. The mother then kills it outright or abandons it so it will either drown at high tide or die of starvation.
These are 100% wild seals in a 100% natural environment where they choose to come to every year

Oh, I thought something like this didn't exist... I'm glad to know that these seals do come and that they can reproduce and live well there... but I think I wouldn't resist to take a closer look if I were there... they are amazing!

taking a closer look of a seal pup can result in its mother either killing it or abandoning it where it will drown. You have to respect the seals. Also they can get VERY nasty VERY quickly, and for 500kg of blubber they can move frightenly quickly!

well, I was just kidding... I wouldn't want a mother seal to kill her pup or to kill me!

What a gorgeous shot, I love the placement with the pup in the rule of thirds as well as the horizon line. The colors all seem to go together but are still dramatic, and the seal stands out nicely. Wonderful job! ^^

thanks the horizon isn't quite on the third tho - I wanted to keep maximum sky whilst keeping enough ground in front of the pup
Its only a guideline anyway
glad you like it
