Description
I will never understand why people don't like coots and think their ugly. This guy was quite content merrily bobbing around nudge a twig around with its beak. Makes a change from seeing them rip the hell out of each other lol.

I love coots (personally.) Their feet are fantastic, they swim underwater like a torpedo and they make funny sounds. An odd but very interesting duck indeed.

Their actually a type of crake, not duck
Glad you like this shot. Its one of my all time personal faves. I don't know why - I think its a combination of the light, reflections and the subject. Coots seem to an 'under dog' when it comes to water birds and not very popular.

I'd not heard of the crake. Even my Sibley Guide To Birds book doesn't mention the word but refers to the genus and calls the coot "Duck-like." But I stand corrected and learned something today. Thanks.

No problem I used to think they were ducks. I can't remember how I discovered it was a crake lol.

Crake (as it turns-out) is a word more commonly used in Europe.
That might explain why I'd not heard it but I'm somewhat new to the bird photography business.

haha.. they aint ugly just a pain to photograph right. I never managed it yet as the black feathers always throw everything off. Never can get the eyes propperly on it or the white is blown out... and stuff like that. But this is a work of art. great shot xx

yeah you REALLY have to photograph them within the first hour or last hour of the day with the warm light on them to get the exposure accurate. Always compensate for black subjects with +0.7/+1.0ev to bring out the details but watch the highlights. If in doubt, bracket lol.

This is another strong piece Justin. Great light and peaceful colours.
I think it needs levelling slightly anti-clockwise? I try to get the centre ripples looking horizontal with shots like this.

cheers mate. I corrected the level - I kept ten various shots of this and corrected the horizon on all but this one! doh!!! So knackered - just woke up after sleeping for a few hours and still wiped out after this morning. 4.30 to bushy, left at 10.30, home at 11.45, then 3 hours solid processing lol.

Ugly? I think they're beautiful. It looks like the image is slanted a bit though, the ripples give it away, it makes it look a little odd.
