Description
"Kelsey always dreamed of wide, bright oceans."So! Last month I challenged myself to create a design or idea once a day for 31 days to develop the world of Jellybots. I'm going to be posting some of the highlights of that challenge right here
Jellybots is a passion project that started as a number of character designs back in 2011, since then it's grown quietly as I worked on it between other full-time projects. Some of you will remember the minicomic I did a few years back!Β
I've been searching for ways to keep the dream alive, and I'm excited to be at it again!
This was prompted by a question from a twitter follower about wheelchairs, and the ongoing #mermay challenge that was going on last month. It never occured to me before that Jelly might be a wonderful medium for rehabilitation!

Your jellybots thing is still going? That's great, haven't seen your gallery for a while! Also I love it when someone designs a character with disabilities and turns them into a hero-so inspiring!!

I remember that comic, and I always wanted more of this world. I love the concept, the look, the feel... It's so cool! And this one makes me smile because it reminds me of a friend who has Spina-Bifida and would "leap" at the chance for something like this

I think its a very cool concept and idea to let people explore swimming, when certain barriers prevent them. Great drawing btw

Oooooooo, SWEET! Β Love both the concept and the execution! Β Beautifully done! Β Β Β Β Β Β Β
Reminds me a little bit of a girl I once knew from science-fiction/fantasy conventions way back, who used a wheelchair and also did cosplay. Β So her character was a mermaid! Β (She created a really cool backstory for her character, too.).Β

Well, let's see, this is going back about 30 years or so, to the late '80s, after "Splash" was released, but before Disney's "Little Mermaid" came out, so it was right in-between those 2 movies, and the first time I met her was at a sci-fi convention in San Jose, Ca.
The costume she designed & wore was really interesting & well done.Β The tail section was made out of the same type of shiny, stretchy material they make swim-suits out of I think, and she wore a kind of headdress over her costume-wig (which was a sort of greenish blonde), made from a kind of fishnet-material, adorned with various-sized seashells, starfish, Chinese coins (the kind with holes in the center) strung together on cords, and various other shiny baubles which, she explained, mermaids love to collect from the ocean floor.
Anyway, the character-story she related (with tongue firmly in cheek, you understand) went (to the best of my recollection), something like this:
"Oh yeah, I thought I'd never make it here!Β First, I had a tough time swimming through the Golden Gate, with the tide going against me!Β I forgot how strong that current was!Β I thought I'd never make it!Β Then, when I finally made it through, getting past all those crazy boaters on the Bay wasn't easy, either!Β All those crazy kayakers and jet-skiers!Β Don't they ever look where there going?Β Don't they know that mermaids have the right-of-way on the water?Β And what's with all those gawky tourists on the Red & White Fleet?Β What were they looking at?Β Didn't they ever see a mermaid before?Β Anyway, I swam all the way down to the South Bay, then dragged myself onto the salt flats near Milpitas.Β From there, I had a tough time catching a bus!Β Even though I had enough money for the fare, none of the drivers would let me aboard!Β Apparently, the coin-boxes didn't take Spanish doubloons.Β And as they drove away, leaving me there, I swear I heard a couple of them say, "There's something fishy about that girl...!"
She went on & elaborated a bit further from there, with similar backstories about where the various parts of her costume-jewelry originated ("Oh, and these earrings, I found them just lying around on the floor of the China Sea a few years ago...") but you get the general idea...
Early the next morning, when I saw her in the hotel coffee-shop, out of costume & back in her regular "mundane" street-clothes & everything, I said 'Hi' to her & kind of said, "Oh, where's our finned friend?"Β And she picked it right up, kind of smiled & said, "Oh, she's back upstairs in the hotel-room, soaking in a tub of nice, cool seawater, and she's letting me use her chair in the meantime..."

Okay, friend. THIS is cool. I tip my hat to your creativity, and encourage you to pursue this marvelous idea of science-fantasy. You have truly touched upon something with as much potential as, well, as malleable, semi-sentient jelly. Well drawn, and well done!
