Let me begin by saying: I love the paintings and drawings like Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte or Van Gough's Starry Night from the Impressionism age, and your style and your execution of this drawing is majestic and a grand tribute to that age. The repetition of the swirls gives a nice overall flow to the drawing. In fact, the flow creates a smooth, rhythmic tone throughout to the unique features of the person, tree, grass, road, and clouds. I would suggest to emphasize darker shading for the branches in the clouds because of a slight contrast conflict. The monotone color of this image emphasizes a thoughtful, but sad person perhaps an out cast from society with different views with only a umbrella to comfort him or her or an individual taking a break from the stresses or worries of life. You have a wonderful artistic technique, and I hope to see more works from you in the future. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

At first glance, I see beauty, I feel memories, I enjoy comfort.
I see light at the end of that road and I try to imagine what happened on the journey through the darkness of the foreground edge, and then I am reminded of hope and of Past, Present, and Future and I love to let my heart return to your story here over and over. At the minimum, this work to me is
honest,
pure,
good,
virtue
praiseworthy,
comforting,
peaceful,
true,
and if there be any other good thing I could write about this work, that would be a pleasure pleasure also.

Shadows... as far under all of the only light in this picture. The shading is well made. You can see clearly how this was created. Beautiful in many ways on its own. Its mood seems sad but rather peaceful. The little person holding and umbrella looks just real. It looks like its an old picture from many years ago. The smudges and way the finger prints fuse together make it how may I say... unique. The perspective of the shadow and the demensions are almost real. It feels like you're standing on a ledge, it is raining and you and your friend are parting ways, you just stand in the rain with sadness filling your heart as your friend leavea you forever.
It reminds me of when I lost my friend dearest to me, it still haunts me... this picture brings back that sadness. But thats all in the picture from my opinion. As all artists know the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." -pablo Picasso. We all indeed know, this picture is the most beautiful sketch I've seen in ages...

**Note I didn’t notice you had asked for a critique when I first posted my comment. My comment is pretty much how I felt about your piece so I’ll copy and paste the original comment… but I will include why I gave you a five star in each category so that it will be a proper critique.**

Hey it’s me. You added one of my comic strips from 2008 to your favorites and I had stated that I would peruse your gallery, and this extraordinary artwork was the first to catch my eye.

What I really love about this piece is the sheer depth of the details. To be honest you have taken a really basic technique, hatching, a completely transformed it into something I have never seen before, namely the swirls. They look like fingerprints (staying true to the title) as if this artwork has its own unique way of expressing its identity because let me tell you it does. The whole scene just elicits melancholic nostalgia from me… reminding of the times when I was caught in the rain in similar settings. The sky was just as white and the surroundings were also absent of color and expressed the different range of values as if my mind was capturing that specific point of time and marking every single emotions for me to reflect upon when reminiscing at a later point.

I absolutely love the tree because and every single branch extending forth like a network of sorts stripped of all its leaves. It reminds me of a Winter setting when the trees are bare and struggling to cling to its life during that trying season, but because of the subtitle Rain, it also reminds me of a Spring barren of its youthful animation because the clouds appearing is its stark reminder of the time it was frozen within Winter’s Tomb.

The man with the umbrella appears to be the only form of active life in this piece because the tree is obviously dead or is dying and I notice a contrast between the two. The man has his umbrella to shield himself from the rain and he’s alive and well but the tree is dead and stripped of all its leaves and thus has no way of shielding its self from the rain. I’m also reminded that once you die your corpse is tagged with identification, (the toe tag) and on it is a print. (I can’t recall if whether if it’s the finger print or the toe print) either way the rain is shaped in the swirls of a finger. It’s not marking the man, but the tree (and the man is looking at the tree.) I suppose the contrast is life and death: The man is refusing to accept the fact that one day he will be as dead as the tree; unlike the man the tree has accepted its death and is being marked so there is no need to shield itself from something that has already happened. Or perhaps the man is being encouraged by the tree to continue with his own life, continue walking his path because he’s not being marked like the tree.
So by the man shielding himself from the rain can denote the universal fear of dying or even hope to carry on until death and the tree stripped of its leaves can denote the acceptance of death.

This is a really outstanding and thought provoking piece and my only complaint is that it’s not framed in somewhere in my room. I did however add this piece to my favorites so that one day I will be able to purchase it as a print.

I gave nicholasjolly a five star in each category for the following reasons:

A Five Star in Vision because he had the vision of Fingerprint and Rain as it he appropriately stated in his title and he executed it with ease in this one of a kind piece and as with each finger print, they are all unique and one of a kind which leads to the next category.

A Five Star in Originality, because like a fingerprint, this piece has its own identity and is distinguished from the rest. Its unique appearance is simply breathtaking and nicholasjolly utilized a simple basic art technique, hatching, to illustrate the rain and support the meaning of the title is really original.

A Five Star in Technique because anybody who can use a basic art technique and create such a thought provoking masterpiece is masterful as an artist and knows what they’re doing.

Finally, a Five Star in Impact because this has truly left an impact on my mind. As I have stated, the scene has evoked nostalgia from me. Times of when I was caught in the rain. I find myself as a niche in rainy weather and cloudy weather; scenic scenes that my presence completes like a missing piece to a puzzle. I find myself at a creative peak during those scenes and just seeing this has inspired me like I am inspired so many times when I see a cloudy sky or listen to the pitter patter of rain falling against the roof or crashing against my window.

Nicholasjolly is an artist that will continue to create masterful pieces that will not only provoke thoughts of awe and wonder with his unique visions executed through his original techniques and will leave impacts in the minds of his audiences everywhere.

Keep up the great work!

These pen & ink renderings remind me so much of the work of the very late Fritz
Eichenburg, who did woodcuts and wood engravings. Try Googling the name if, by slight chance, you don't know him.
