Book cover commission for the Novel Sword's Call by Chrissy Szarek [link] It will be available for purchase early 2013 from Gypsy Shadow Publishing [link] Image exclusive use of client. From the blurb…
For generations, the Ryhans, ruling family of the Province of Greenwald have been keepers of a sword rumored to possess enough magic to defeat kings. Lord Varthan, a former archduke and betrayer of the king, covets the sword and invades Greenwald.
Lady Ceralda Ryhan, daughter of the murdered duke, gains the sword and flees, trusting only her white wolf, Trikser—magically bonded to her. Cera needs nothing more to aid in her fight.
Jorrin Aldern, half elfin and half human, left his home in the mountains of Aramour to find his human father who disappeared twenty turns before, but finds Cera with Varthan and his shades on her tail instead. His dual heritage and empathic magic will tempt Cera in ways she never thought she’d desire. But can he convince her trust and love can pave the path to redemption or will the epic battle end in tragedy and evil conquer them all?

Amazing picture! I love the characters and the scenery - the atmosphere is captured really well, I think!
The only thing I would like to add is that it might have been an idea to put the main characters not so much into the background, but hey, it's still marvellous work!

Thank you
The client wanted to see the characters in full, and then you have to make space for the text which is why they are pushed back (there's also space for bleed around the edges). One of my original sketch ideas did have them much closer to the viewer. That's the thing with commissioned work, you're working to someone else's guidelines

Oh, I see! That makes sense indeed, I had such issues with commissions as well, so I feel for you complitely! Sometimes they just don't listen and insist upon their will, but anyhow your picture is epic!

It's a different way of working, and there are so many things to take into account when making an illustration that will be used in a particular way. There's nothing wrong with working to a clients specs, makes you work outside your comfort zone, but the artistic choices for personal pieces are definitely different to those made for commissioned paintings!

Very true indeed, that's the way it is! I personally always try to bring in my own ideas as much as possible and make the client understand my choices, but sometimes they just won't listen and insist on their expectations. It definitely is very different and one has to get used to it!

I am the author of the book. This is a print cover (picture the book lying face down and flat) so, that's why it's the way it is. The right side will be what's on the book. [link] check here if you want to see the "done" w/ words on it.

I see! As I said already, it's very well made - I didn't know it was meant to cover the entire book in the first place, you see! I'll have a look at the link, thank you!
