The characters and objects of focus should be in one of the lines. Let's say if someone is walking placing them in the center of the picture will make it stiff somehow.
But placing it within any of the vertical lines and facing in towards the center gives the impression that the object walks/moves in.
However if the object is in these lines and facing away from the center it will give the impression that it moves away from the picture.

There is one small problem Niko, you have neglected to mention why the rule of thirds is important.
