I remember reading about a bust stop in New York. There was an advertisement for the new thin pretzels (the flat ones). Their slogan was 'You can never be too thin.' Someone brilliant and amazing taped a piece of paper directly underneath it saying 'Actually, you can.' and I believe linked to a website dedicated to those with the disorder.

what scares me most is that i used to crave a figure such as this. labelled as orthorexic and on the border of anorexia, i was happy with the bony figure forming in the reflection of the mirror. this picture really prings back painful memories and even sinful temptations, but i'm happy that i'm recieving the right treatment, and have alot of lovely people pointing me in the right direction.
any eating disorder is an awful disease that kills you slowly, sometimes without even knowing- like a cancer. but like any cancer, it's treatable.
i love how raw this image is. it's real. so real, you can touch it, and not just mentally.

it's a fantastic piece of art, and it deserves all the attention it gets. it wouldn't surprise me if alot of viewers could relate to it in more ways than one, especially in society these days...

It doesn't look like anorexia in the true sense...if it was, the arms would be much more skeletal as well. I'm assuming the model really sucked in their gut and puffed their chest out--still, the message comes across clearly.

Yes I know, I noticed that afterwards, too.
But still, the arms aren't the chubbiest. you are right! Thank you a lot!

Simple, yet down to the point. I like the contradictory message underneath as it makes people think, and yes, I got it right the first time. The posing is very good, and far less abstract than one may think. I may have found myself in similar poses once in a while.
By the way, there are a few relatively new studies about anorexia, linking it to autism rather than eating disorders, which is why therapies that are based on the premise of eating disorders usually fail. It also explains why relatively few men have it, while autism has approximately the same ratio of female patients. In other words, anorexia is now believed to be partly genetic, though of course circumstances of life also influence it, and rather an obsession on the body, on control, which is similar to autism (which a certain part of anorexic girls even get diagnosed with) - maybe the "female" version of autism, as some sources say.
Of course I'm not a scientist and can't say if it's true, but from my own experiences I found these theories to make quite some sense, compared to what's been said about it before.
Eeks, sorry for the babbling.

I appreciate the fact you actually looked at the image properly and ... actually got it! That's important to me.
But this sounds weird to me, actually. How could it be genetic? It's just as thinking being homosexual is a genetic thing, as I think. But maybe I can't really tell.

Because anorexia often isn't about wanting to be thin (for beauty standards) like a lot of other eating disorders. It's about wanting to be successful and in control. There are theories about medieval saints (mostly female) for example who definitely, according to what we know about them, were anorexic. Yet in their time, thin wasn't the beauty standard, and yet they obsessed about not eating because it was supposed to show their special allience with god and it gave them control over their bodies which they didn't have over the rest of their lives, especially if they lived in convents. Yet still, where did this come from and why were only so few of them able to do it? I think there might even be family histories that may help to find out about this. I heard about a new way to detect autism in brainscans about two years ago. Maybe, if both are linked, this could also prove (or not) a possible connection.
Maybe these two articles can explain it a bit better than I do. They're written for non-scientific background readers, but I hope the theories get conveyed anyway.

That doesn't make sense, the rate autism is nearly double in men than women.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hisietari In reply to DeadSweet [2011-08-12 13:07:37 +0000 UTC]
Exactly:
autism - a lot of male patients, less female patients
anorexia - a lot of female patients, less male patients
-> speculation if both are actually different outcomes of the same cause

still don't get it. if autism is related to anorexia it sounds like you're saying there would be more men than women with anorexia because more men have autism. ?

Xadrea In reply to Limelight-Night [2011-08-12 20:39:46 +0000 UTC]
it has to do with stereotypes not actual diagnosis's. as it turns out, the numbers are close to equal, the same goes for domestic abuse, women are still the most as far as victims, but the number of male victims is catching up and fast. it comes down to how society feels about it. anorexia is seen as a "female" disorder, and so not many men come foward or it's even possible that it is ignored

hey no prob
it's a terrible thing, i just hope that men who are suffering will feel less afraid to seek treatment based on what people will think of them (among other reasons not to get help)
