wow really? That's messed up that they won't help him, I'm sorry to hear that. Has he tried a second opinion? Or even tried a different medical unit/place?

Yeah...he's tried like 7 I do believe, they all say the same.

"Your throat isn't badly damaged enough for us to take drastic measures, you just have to try and eat."

One place even had the cheek to assume his mum was neglecting him and threatened her with court =/

our hospitals are so screwed up in the UK >< but as he says, unless you can feel the true fear of it you will never understand or have a desire to help

oh I'm sorry its so difficult, I wish like you that there were better standards for treatment, he shouldn't have to suffer like that.

I wasn't implying it was their choice. I don't think anyone would just choose not to eat. But I have been around people who feel as if they're too heavy, and have to lose weight even if they're already perfect or underweight. Sometimes they're pressured by their parents to be perfect and they're popular in school making them feel they have to look good. That's what I've observed. Sorry about your friend. That has to be tough.

SasukeTeme In reply to Birdie121 [2011-08-12 16:59:14 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, weight should be choice not standard...well as long as it stays on healthy levels.

Yeah, I mean you'd be surprised by the amount of people who have the same problem as him, just a lot of them keep it to themselves so no one has been given the chance to really understand and just immediately assume it's choice...

Yeah, I hate how charts say if you're 5'7" like I am, you should be between 130 and 135, ideally. So that makes people think they HAVE to be within that weight. Or when girls especially don't realize that different heights mean different weights, and a 5'6" girl feels she has to be the same weight as someone who is barely taller than 5 feet. Personally, I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs. But that's the weight I should be, for my build. And I'm perfectly happy with it.

Yeah...charts just make people feel bad.

My friend is 5'5 and weighs 80.79lbs, he should be like 134lbs

Maintaining a healthy weight is good (esp. w/ all the obesity going on) but imitating the dietary habits of Karen Carpenter is NOT the way to do it!

This image definitely caught my eye and hit home with me in a completely different way. I've never had an eating disorder, but my mother has at several points in her life (including when she was pregnant with me), and it pains me so that she views her body in such a way. Regardless, this piece is absolutely fantastic and portrays the body images many boys and girls have for themselves PERFECTLY.

WeirdAlbatross In reply to ??? [2011-08-12 13:22:25 +0000 UTC]

The refusal to eat is only the benign part of it.

It's the ripping, the screaming, the tunnel vision and frantic suffocation inside a belligerent, useless body that is not yours, is not you, never was you. The cyclical thinking and crippling anxiety, gnashing and grinding of teeth while you sleep, because your mind thinks it's high and your body thinks it's starving, and your heart gives out to the slow, dull plodding of a dying animal. You're just a dying animal, unfit for survival.

That's how anorexia gets you in the end.

And your photo reveals all of that.

I've found it more healing to recognize it for what it is, than let it fester unspoken. Thank you, and my best wishes to you.

I can personally justify that this photo portrays awareness of anorexia occurring in males, not females too. Its just the straight hard facts of what media and peer pressure can do to human beings
