Description
K2 is the second highest, second deadliest mountain on Earth. But this ain't the border of China and Pakistan.ΒThis is my first painting like this. I wanted to paint a vast sci-fi scene with a mecha. I think I'll try another.Β

This is great to look at when it is hot outside.
Getting shivers because it looks so cold and windy.
Mr Robot looks like he is waiting.
Much emotions he might have not but those tiny soft humans must be awfully slow and squishy with their miniature picks.
For now he looks innocent and kind hehe.

That's a great analysis of the scene, glad you gave the bot some personality,
and some foreshadowing of events to come :]

Cool design on the legs, the arms feel a bit short though (:
I guess it always has the pick for long reach use though!

I figure he can do some mean squats with those legs if he needs to touch his toes (if he has toes).Β
Or maybe his arms are telescopic :]

I absolutely love this painting ! I will be back with more later. Just in a rush to get some other stuff done today. It's funny, because I'm working on a mountain scene too, showing the 3 hikers (my two friends and I, on our recent trip to Scotland). I am hoping to finish that sometime soon. But I love this scene. The colours in this alien type world (I assume?), just work perfectly.

Thanks. That happens to me a lot on this site, working on a piece then seeing a piece in some way similar.
Meaningless coincidence or synchronisity?Β

There seems to be a lot of symbolism in this. So many subtle details which I see and I will attempt to explain what I have noticed. The machine/robot climber is like technology towering over us, as we (as a species) attempt to scale a huge, difficult mountain. Is that symbolic of our struggles to advance ourselves in what seems to be an alien world today with the modern struggles we have? Can the symbolism have a subtle but powerful meaning to today's dilemmas we have with A.I and technology in general? Or have I gone crazy with my analysis? hahaha. If this is correct, then the 4 climbers can also represent our stages in life, all struggling to climb that steep mountain. The fact that the 4th person lagging behind must mean something. Us as a species seem to be working together, which could be another clue in this scene. The robot size towering over us, could symbolise the fact that technology has an advantage over us to overcome these hurdles (the climb), yet it's also at the bottom, and has a daunting task of reaching the summit. My analysis might seem like utter nonsense. But hey, that's my weird mind in operation here. haha. I also noticed the rocket in the background being launched, going into the unknown with so many asteroids (are these symbolic of obstacles, too?). I see the exaggerated gigantic ice axe, which can mean the sheer brute force technology can have to overcome the hard, icy terrain. It also looks indestructible with its hard upper body armour, yet the legs do look a bit fragile. I am curious to know if anything I've said makes any sense. Β btw, yes it's probably coincidence that i was working on a mountain scene. I still haven't finished it yet. LOL

I guess I put a hint of symbolism into most of my paintings, it's always in the back of my mind. The most conscious attempt at symbolism in this case was probably through the comparative scale of everything: the characters, landscape, objects . . .Β
I'm definitely expressing the relationship of the human race with technology but in a more ambiguous way than you put it.Β
I think I was more interested in the psychological interactions of a group while exploring and adventuring. Although faceless, each character demonstrates a certain personality through there actions, position, and apparent roles. I also tried to display persona (persona as opposed to anima, perhaps) in the landscape, heavenly bodies, and the spaceship as well. They all have their own story.Β
Or . . . it's just a team climbing a mountain :] I say that, but really there is always a little bit more to it than just that. My narrative behind an image usually changes throughout the painting process, so it's interesting to hear what you think of the end result.Β

I feel like the robot is looking like he doesn't want to be there, he just knows he's going to have to be sherpa..
it looks like he's carrying the flag for the top so he knows he's in this the whole way, and he's miserable!
I like the little ship flying in the sky behind him.
It would be cool if you could make the background more 'out there', 3 dimensional sort of to give a sense that the expedition is farther away than we think..
(I really love the robot)

The scene doesn't feel vast, it's more implied that it's vast because you can see the mountains and planets in the background. That isn't necessarily bad, it keeps the focus on the climbers and your awesome mecha there. It's all about what you wanted to achieve, so take this critique how you feel it should be taken.
I really like it, this is a nice piece. It feels cold, yet comforting as if I was one of those climbers being watched over by a hulking mech.

nilwilnil In reply to Savoretti [2018-05-14 20:26:27 +0000 UTC]
Implied vastness, that's a good point. There are a few things I'll mess around with more next time to create a more actual sense of scope: canvas dimensions to draw the eye, atmospheric haze for depth of field, the size of the main figures. I tend to zoom in to fill the canvas but empty space is good sometimes. Also, I think I disregarded my intention of vastness halfway through to focus on the characters. So, thanks, I appreciate the constructive criticism.Β

Savoretti In reply to nilwilnil [2018-05-15 04:14:56 +0000 UTC]
Of course, and like I said I don't personally believe my point made your piece bad, it's just something to note. If your focal point was the characters then this is perfectly fine, but of course it's always good to improve and to come away from a piece with a completely different point of view on it.

This looks so cool, I like the square canvas! The colors and cool tones, the winter scene, that robot is so cool looking love his design and how his legs are!
The background with asteroids and planets and such is so cool too, it adds alot to the feel of not being earth.

I changed the legs at the last minute, they were basically pointy sticks before. As far as the square goes, I guess I couldn't decide between a tall or wide canvas :]
